    NARRATION OF TINA KENNARD

    I am sitting in the waiting room with Melvin, Kit and Lucy. My parents have gone back to the apartment — dad’s got a bit of a cold and this probably isn’t the best place for him.

     

     

     

    Kit has been talking to Shane – they are about to announce that the wedding is off. CJ has her briefing and any time soon all hell will erupt. As of an hour ago Peggy became the President – Bette has no powers except to decide when she takes her job back.

     

    “Are you okay baby girl ? “

     

     

     

     

    I nod as Kit sits beside me.

     

     

     

    “She was in a lot of pain – otherwise she would not have given in and called the wedding off “

    “I know – she looked so sick “

    “She is but the surgeons can take that appendix away and make her better “

     

     

     

     

     

    “I know – I just worry about her “

    “When you were ill she was totally wrapped up with you getting well- I know that you will be the same “

    “I will — while she is recovering I am going to take care of her night and day “

    “The Coral Sea ? “

    “No – I’ll have the Virginia house decorated and as soon as she is well enough I will take her there. No politics until she is well enough “

     

     

     

    “Well baby I wish you luck – she will want her job back as soon as she wakes up “

    “She is not getting her job back until she is well enough. I know she is a work-aholic – I know that more than anyone else. But this is her health Kit . For once Bette Porter is going to have to get used to being told what to do “

    11. Crap, Tina, every hospital has some kind of chaplain on call, marry Bette at her bedside! Someone should tell Lucy that Star Trek IS a western, it’s just that the space cowboys prefer velour to leather. (I remember those days, I got permission from my mother to stay up late to watch Star Trek, which was OK by her as it was shown on Fridays and I had a velour shirt of my own then, dark blue. I’ve secretly longed to have another.) And what do you mean Ally, wooden sets? More like cardboard and styrofoam! Can’t argue about the acting though, but that was part of the charm. “Damn it, Jim! I’m a doctor, not a (fill in the blank)! You could always count on Bones to be a team player. And thanks for the kind words, Ally, I think. God damn it don’t I know! You don’t have to rub it in!
