    Chapter 19

    “Yeah we’re good” Shane agreed glancing up at Bette, maybe that was why she was feeling so jittery, performing under these emotionally charged conditions, she could feel Bette’s anxiety from here.

    Bette simply shook her head in response and sat down on the pew behind her for two reasons, one her jelly legs could no longer support her and two it reinforced the fact that she was not leaving.

    Tina smiled in resignation, Shane sighed regretting her foolishness at allowing Bette to be within eyeshot of her OR, she imagined Bette crashing right through the glass panel if there was even a slight indication that everything wasn’t going as planned. Shane removed her hands from the levers and stretched her fingers, she was close to the tumour, somehow she had to diffuse the tension she was feeling.

    Shane took a deep breath, cleared her throat “Tell them all Tina how long you and Bette have been together”

    “Fifty years” Tina replied proudly “We were five, and from that day we’ve practically been inseparable… I pricked my finger on a rose bush…..”

    “And you cried like a baby” Bette teased

    “I did not” Tina denied half-heartedly throwing Bette a look “Anyway little Miss Prim up there in her immaculate white dress knelt down and pricked her own finger until it bled”

    Bette smiled her first genuine smile of the afternoon, to this day she didn’t know why she had done that, the truth being that it had stung like a bitch as she expected it too.

    Listening to the tale she had heard countless times before, Shane could feel the anxiety seep from the room.

    Between Bette and Tina and their recounting of their lives together they had everyone in the O.R. completely captivated to the extent that Shane had to remind them they were actually here to do a job, not laugh at the pairs escapades or cry at the sloppy bits. Secretly she was pleased, as long as Tina kept talking and recalling her memories the necessary cognitive tests where being fulfilled and there would be no need for memory cards.

    The next couple of hours passed quickly and Shane was close to hitting the final hurdle, the only hiccup so far being the little scare they had all received when Tina’s heart rate shot up, only to be reassured by Tina herself that her mind had wandered to a place that would not be appropriate to share with everyone in the room.

    3. Fantastic chapter. Their remembrances of their life together was really sweet and loving. Did I miss the heart attack part or did you just not write it for us. Then it was alright when Tina remembered Bette forgetting the shoes and Shane poking fun at them standing in the middle of a monsoon after their wedding vows. And now… Now I’m worried again.
