The Dying of the Light Part 19
“Hey,” She heard Shane whisper, leading Tina to the lounge.
Tina was hanging onto Shane like she might disappear. “Hi,” She whispered, looking up quickly to see Shane’s concern replaced momentarily with a smile.
“Let’s sit,” Shane instructed, easing Tina down onto the lounge before sitting herself. Turning to face her, Shane simply asked “What’s up?”
This inadvertently brought a smile to Tina’s face. “Bette’s in the hospital.”
**********
Alice jumped out of the car and raced through the doors of the hospital. She had no idea where to look for the girls, and knew from past experience it was almost impossible to find out where to go from the staff. She wasn’t family, she wasn’t anything but a friend… but she’d try again, it couldn’t hurt.
She ran up to the admittance desk, stopping shy of the desk and breathing hard for a moment before calmly walking up to the desk.
“Can I help ya?” The young nurse asked, sorting some file on the table in front of her. Good, she was distracted, Alice thought.
“I’m looking for Bette Porter, she was bought in about an hour ago.” Alice estimated, not really knowing what time she was bought in, all she was told from Tina was that Helena had been trying her for awhile but she had to stop.
Nodding, the nurse diligently plugged Bette’s name into the computer, pulling up her current location. Every keystroke felt like an hour to Alice, and by the time the nurse looked up to give her the location, Alice was jumping from side to side, anxious.
“Bette Porters family are in the surgical waiting…” Before she could finish, Alice hastily thanked the nurse and ran to the elevator. She knew where the waiting room was.
**********
“Fuck,” Shane spat. She just couldn’t believe it. Bette Porter tried to commit suicide. Bette may have succe… no “NO!” Shane yelled, refusing the believe it. To give voice to her fear. “No.”
Tina watched Shane, understanding the denial but surprised by the anger behind it. There wasn’t a thought of anger in Tina’s mind, only helplessness and sadness. A deep, pervasive sadness which swelled everytime she imagined Bette, in those last moments after the phone call.

Hi, Deean! Well, we just hope that those painkillers are effective, as to make you at ease. As for the story, what we can see is overall confusion on every member of Bette’s friends and family. The Psychiatric help is urgently needed by Bette, so she can fight those terrible demons that have haunted her all her life. We think that Tina is regaining the trust of all of Bette’s friends and also she wants some feedback on her, as to learn more about what happened to Bette during the period she was absent from her life. It will show her the other side that Bette has always kept hidden. Can’t wait for your next update. Take very good care of yourself. PPS Hugs and kisses on both your cheeks – Lucero & Marsha (Proud Salsa Aunties to the ever loving JC and Eunichick)
even if tina did know about bette in the pool. it was not tina’s fault. bette needs to be responisble for her own actions than and now!! i can just see the gang blaming tina for the whole down fall of bette… but they need to lay off tina…heck kit didn’t even listen to tina when she called about something was wrong in the first place… feel better! post when you can :)PPS
relief! They all get another chance. Bette’s alive. I really wasn’t sure which way you’d go- both would have been interesting- but i know i’ll ‘enjoy’ this exploration more. Long way to go I know, but this in your capable hands, i look forward to it.
Another great chapter though I’ve learned to expect nothing less from you! I think if the girls were thinking rationally they wouldn’t blame themselves for Bette’s actions. But I think its human nature to do that so I hope they come to realize that only Bette is responsible for her actions.

This is your story, D, and I’ll continue to support you and read it no matter the direction. But my wish is for Bette to survive this and Tina be the one to help her through it! PPS
I read this before lunch,at the time it left me with a heavy heart. I was thinking of all the people that loves Bette and needs her in their life. Bettes demons start when her Mother left.all these years she thought it was her fault, them trying to please Melvin.the Kit and her problem, all the women that were in and out of her life, She and Tina problems. The Melvin death, Dana death,Tina want to explore Men and the fact that she didnt want Bette as Angie other parent. That is a lot for such a person. In the business world she was strong, ruthless at time, and at the top of her field. In her personal life very fragile.,only the ones she would let to close to her knew the gentle lovng person. Tina seen it all. The love she had for Tina was beyond this world. Tina and Angie was her world. When that was gone what was left? I said in the beginning that Bette needs Angie and Tina to breathe,to make her blood flow.to make the sun shine. without them it was only darkness. Let the people that loves her, help her That includes Tina and her Boo. thanks for letting me take so much of your time. Hope your elbow mends soon
Hello My Beautiful Dee… hehe… Ok I will be honest with you I can tell you are on pain killers cause there were a couple parts where I had to go back and scratch my head but trust me even with this it was definitely not hard to follow… the sheer pain that everyone is feeling because of this situation is so very powerful… the emotions are so very raw and visceral… Shane’s remembrance of that scene is just so perfect I was thinking about that scene and the scene where Bette gives her speech about forgiveness and I was thinking that would be a perfect bridging point in this powerful tale… Shane’s reactions are just so perfect she is like a little sister who has been spitted by her big sis their relationship is so powerful… and that is a nice twist having Shane and Carmen married and such adds a bit of light to the darkness… I keep wondering about that final passage from the poem…
“And you, my father, there on the sad height, Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray. Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.” – DT
… this passage so feels like a connection between a child and a parent… it is only Angelica that can truly bring Bette back from the edge… if anyone it is only her beautiful Boo… you my amazing friend are doing such an amazing job with this story… and about that PM take your time… no rush TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF FIRST… please… if anything just take care of yourself, love and hugs, Always and Forever, JC (Latin Nephew to those Salsa Angels and ever loving Cuzzie to the ever talented Eunichick)
Wow, just wow! This is my drug of choice at present, and I can’t get enough! PPS.
The deep sadness and pain that has become Bette’s life is overwhelming. You write with such brilliant clarity at the same time as showing us how very lost Bette has become. Shane’s reaction was spot on to the relationship of her and Bette. Tina finally really starting to glimpse how much pain and anguish that Bette has held inside and never shared is the perfect tip of the iceberg. I truly am drawn to your story.Take care of yourself! I hope you are feeling better.
“Tina isn’t to blame for any of this, it’s not her fault,” they say. “Bette made her own choices.” they say. Are the two mutually exclusive? Can someone treat another as monstrously as they want to, especially knowing the other’s fears and wounded places, and then divorce themselves from any fallout, saying, They make their own choices?” Alot of people do that but I think it borders on a kind of sociopathic lack of empathy. Interestingly enough, this responsibility for one’s own choices does not seem to extend to Tina, who “made a mistake”, or has a right to still be angry at Bette for the affair that happened five years ago, or anything else. Someone told me once, that you can’t look for comfort from the one who is hurting you, and that is why Tina needs to stay away from Bette. She has hurt Bette and Bette needs to find a way to recover on her own. As far as letting the firends off the hook…I think to allow someone you profess to love to slowly but surely go down the tubes, not even noticing or caring, isn’t being much of a friend. But there again, not their fault, right? the only one who has to take the heat for her choices is Bette.. I am soooo glad that Bette is alive, and she has to hang on, she has to..
this story is very scare, real and yet beautifully written. If only my friend could have been saved..
This is such an emotional story, it’s like a train wreck, you need to look away but you can’t. I wondered if Tina ever knew of that incident in the pool and she should feel guilty over that episode, it was her fault for flaunting Helena in Bette’s face, just to make her hurt. Tina doesn’t understand the depth of Bette’s love for her and Angelica but with all that is happening, she might begin to realize just how much they are loved and cherished. I know this is your story but please let Bette live for Angelica’s sake, she will need her in the future and no one else can give her the love and understanding that she will need as she grows thru adolescence, teen yrs, and young adulthood. So many things can hurt the child and Bette can help her thru that. I know I’m getting ahead of myself. And actually Angelica is probably the only one that will be able to encourage Bette to live. Bette is so tired of hurting but taking her life is not the answer, there are other ways. You are writing this story so beautifully with much angst, yet liffed with love. Take care of yourself and hope you feel a lot better really soon. Post when you can.
