The Dying of the Light Part 11
Tina watched Bette and knew immediately what she was looking for. “Angelica is with her Auntie Kit until after Lunch.” She explained, hoping that that would assuage her fears.
“Why?” The panic in her voice made Tina frown.
“Because, I have something to give you and I thought that if we needed to talk about it that we could do it now.”
“You promised we wouldn’t have to talk.” Bette’s breath started to catch. She could feel the walls close in and the oxygen being pulled from the room.
Tina stepped forward, she was concerned at the sudden paler of Bette and the way she had begun to tremble. Bette took 2 steps back. She was like a wild animal, looking for a way out of a situation.
Fight or flight, and she had taken to flight, not the normal Bette Porter response, not by a long shot.
Placating, Tina held up her hands and went to sit on the lounge, far enough from Bette to make her feel comfortable, but close enough that they could still see each other. “And we wont have too. I have some papers for you, a couple need your signature.” Tina held up a manilla envelope, subtly encouraging Bette to come over and collect it.
“To sign?” Bette stammered. Was this the end, did Tina want to divide up the property and cleaning break them apart. No more connection, not even Angelica? Her eyes started the sting but she willed herself not to cry. She was stronger then that. She wouldn’t give Tina the satisfaction of seeing her pain. She had given her that too often in the last year.
Tina watched Bette swallow as she snatched the envelope from her hands and ripped it open, violently pulling out the papers and glaring at them. She couldn’t read a word that was written, she just stared as the words blurred in and out of focus.
“…another social work visit.” Bette looked up at Tina, unsure of what she was talking about. Why would she need to see a social worker, they were dividing their property – right? She looked at the papers again, blinking repeatively.
It couldn’t be true…
The words blurred as tears started to burn her cheeks.
It had to be a joke.
Her stomach rolled, and she swallowed trying to keep the bile and what little she had eaten in the last 6 hours down.
She glanced up at Tina, seeing the smile on her face. She looked – content – with what was happening.
Did that make this real?
She looked back down at the papers and read.
She was happy, and yet she had never been so numb.

I’ve always known Bette to be a fighter in every sense of the word. I can always find her standing strong and tall, ready to argue with anybody over anything and to never hold back. This is one of those times where she, as the poet wrote, has to rage against the dying of the light. Bring her back. Don’t let her fall into the abyss.
You are an amazing writer. It makes my heart hurt to see Bette is such pain but to me its completely realistic especially after everything that’s happened. I’m looking forward to your next chapter with the hope that Tina will be able to reach Bette and help her to regain herself.
You have my heart in turmoil over this. I’m so afraid that Bette will perish and never return. Oh please let Bette come back from the brink. The darkness she stands on the edge of can so easily swallow her up.
so heart wrenching this one…
This is the thing. Whether or not Tina allows Bette to adopt or see Angelica or be in her life in any way is completely dependent on Tina and her moods and even whims. She has all the power, and Bette was absolutely powerless. It is incredible that she would say that Bette didn’t love Angie or wouldn’t even miss her. So to keep Angelica from her just because she could, and because it was the best way to hurt Bette, because she was pissed at her for not being who Tina wanted her to be, was to me unforgivable. Tina can have as much fear as she likes, but a real human being deals with that fear on their own. It doesn’t give anyone the right to try to destroy anyone else’s life, and she has purposely and vindictively tried to destroy Bette. I am afraid for her. But hey, whatever happens is all good, cos Tina’s “not that bad.” I find it confusing that the author thinks that while writing so exquisitely of Bette’s destruction at her hands.
If there is something that we are savouring here, in this amazing update of yours, is the pace timing. We shall say it is just PERFECT. First, because things happening inside Bette must not be rushed. She needs that time to gather herself together and come out of the dark place where she is in. Tina’s determination to show Bette the adoption papers was a smart move. Although they can numb her mind, at first, due to her weakened state of mind. Once reality sinks in, her joy will start to come around. We understand that the first social worker who visited B&T was a complete monster, BUT as Joyce pointed out, this new one could do the right thing. Recognition of Bette as the second parent. In order to accomplish acceptance, she needs to let go and return to sanity for the sake of her daughter. This is getting better and better, Deean. Hugs & kisses on both your cheeks. I so just caught up. WOW!!! Poor Bette, I hope Tina keeps her word and let Bette be in Angles life. Now please let Bette come back to life. Thank you
Hello My Beautiful Dee… Oh how you paint the words of pain and love in such beautiful bold brush strokes… much like Bette’s painting you are crafting a masterpiece of pure unadulterated emotions… you have so beautifully rendered all of Bette’s fears… losses… mistrust… as well as Tina’s continued subdued need to be there and allow Bette to take her time… create her own path back to her… I find this is the sign of a purer ‘love’ yes Tina did hurt Bette more then anyone should be hurt and no I am not forgetting Bette’s own pathway of betrayal… but for me Bette has paid for that a million times over… I love the tenderness of friendship you have brought out in Helena and yes I agree if anyone can save Bette from herself it is ‘Kit’ and ‘Angelica’ they are the keys to Bette’s soul right now… and maybe just maybe Tina can find her way back with a little patience and a lot of faith… you my most amazing friend know just how to pull out some of the strongest emotions within my soul… for I have felt a loss… not like Bette’s but a loss that sent me into this kind of darkness… and I thank you dearly for allowing me to remember it… and to rejoice for I have made it through with your friendship I continue to make it though… you completely amaze me my most beautiful Dee… love and hugs, JC (Latin Nephew to those Salsa Angels and Ever Proud to be Cuzzie to the ever Talented Eunichick)
