The Door – Chapter 3 (Finale)

    Chapter 3

This was not the question I was expecting and it must have shown on my face. How was I to answer her?

“Tina……..I don’t……” I stumbled for the right words.

“Please Bette, Helena told me that you never went back into our room after I left. I’m curious as to why.”

Taking a deep breath and slowly exhaling, I looked at her and stated “because I couldn’t.”

This seemed to puzzle her. “Why not?”

“Because it was our room, our special place, our sanctuary. I didn’t feel like I deserved to be in there after what happened.”

She did not reply so I continued.

“Tina, until I ran into you a couple of weeks ago I had not been able to enter that room because it was too painful. It represented what my infidelity had cost me, and served as a constant reminder or punishment if you will of all that I had lost. The day I ran into you at the supermarket, I came home and for the first time in two years I was able to enter that room.”

I got up from the table and indicated that she should remain seated. I walked to the room and retrieved the book she had left on the night table.

I handed it to her when I returned to the dining room. I saw her smile when she saw the book mark still marking the last page she had read.

“Slowly I have started to clean it up and pack up some things. There are some boxes of your things that I’d be happy to return to you if you still want them.”

She looked over at me and smiled. She thanked me for my consideration and said that she would welcome the chance to go through them one day.

One day? What did she mean by one day? I had to ask.

“Oh OK, I just thought that you’d like them now.”

    “Are they in your way?”

    “No, they aren’t but …….”

“Bette…….. don’t you want to know the real reason I came back to LA? Why I am here sitting at your table tonight?”

The thought had not occurred to me. I was just so surprised and thrilled to see her here, that I didn’t even ask why she was here.

    1. Ok you… *sigh* how you can sit there and tell me that you are ‘not’ a writer is beyond my most basic comprehensions… you are a gifted storyteller… you are a gifted writer… you are a ‘gift’ each and every time I read your stories… your words… you ‘sage’ advice I am bewildered… you weave emotions and complexities within the simplicity that is life… with this ‘short’ story you have amazed me with your ability to evolve your own unique styles and still retain each and every fiber that makes you a writer… the short story is the hardest thing to create with any kind of proficiency if only because you have such a limited amount of words to create an emotional connection between your characters… between writer and her creation… between reader and the words and you have done such an amazing job at this… you my friend completely amaze me and inspire me… mucho love and hugs, JC (Latin Nephew to those Salsa Angels)

Have fun Halloween and be very, very careful especially with the little one. People don’t care anymore and inspect everything before he/she consumes any of the loot you gather.
