    The Canvas of Our Life…

    Bette:

I graduated with honors at Yale with a master’s degree in Art History. My father always pushed me to treat art as a hobby not a career. He was utterly disappointed to find that I had not switched my major to something he referred to as “practical” Perhaps that’s why I still felt like a disappointment to him even though I graduated Magna ***** Laude.
In the winter of 1996 I decided to move to West Hollywood. I’m not sure if I had any rhyme or reason in choosing this city, there was always something romantic about it to me as a child. The historic Hollywood sign, the stars, the weathermost of all the opportunities. I needed a new start, a new pallet, if you will, to paint the story of my life. I came here to escape the ever churning city life in New York. I was growing tired of the gray area that everone I knew seemed to float around in. Art was my life now and I needed more color, even in the proverbial sense. I left New York despite its historic dedication to the arts. Even though NY had many other attractive qualities that any up and coming successful, intelligent person would be drawn to. The cold, unfriendly, and “small fish in a big pond” feeling was not one of them for me. So I set my sights on California. There were dozens of galleries, museums”opportunities” for me there. I had only been in town for a little over a week, and that week was spent unpacking and settling in to the home I purchased 1 month before. It was a little presumptuous buying a house assuming I would find a job. But I was moving on pure instinct. Somehow, even though my brain was screaming “WHAT ARE YOU DOING!!” my soul knew exactly what was going to happen. So, for the first time in my life I followed my heart and dove in head first. Within 2 weeks of making contact with the art community I was offered a job at a small gallery called Chac Mool which featured contemporary and Latin American art. It was a humble start for me. I had higher hopes, but I knew I had to get my feet wet. So like the painter who looks into a blank canvas, has all of the things needed to create a beautiful painting, this is the start of the beautiful part of my life.
