The Balloon Festival
“I’m an asshole. That’s how. Ugh.”
Tina rolled her eyes in disgust. When did she turn into this person? Who was she kidding? She knew when.
“Did you like your surprise, Tee?” Alice asked a little too excitedly.
“What surprise?”
Alice looked at Tina oddly. Tina noticed the look Bette gave Alice. Alice didn’t let Bette’s scowl stop her.
“What do you mean ‘what surprise’?”
“I mean I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“What is she talking about, Baby?” Tina turned her gaze towards Bette.
Tina saw Bette glowering at Alice. Bette opened her mouth but before Bette could answer, Alice kept talking.
“What the fuck, Tee? You didn’t notice all of these flowers all over your fucking house when you came home last night or when you got up this morning?” Alice asked pointing at the bouquets on the kitchen table.
Tina looked at the flowers. Then at Bette who smiled slightly and looked away. Then back at Alice.
“Bette forced me, Shane and Dana to go to every fucking flower shop within a 20 mile radius to find the absolute perfect flowers to surprise you with for when you got back from being on location. She wanted flowers to put in every vase you own…and that’s a lot of fucking vases, by the way. No one needs that many fucking vases. You two are vase hoarders. And then after we got the perfect flowers and put them in the ridiculous amount of vases you own, it then took Bette another hour to decide exactly the optimal places to put them for you. And you’re telling me, you didn’t notice ANY of them?” Alice said pointing to the coffee table and then to the kitchen window and then to the stand by the door like they were contestants on some obscure game show and she was the lesbian version of Vannah White.
Tina followed Alice’s gestures. Her face dropped with each location. She glanced over at Bette. She was still looking down. This wasn’t the first time she’d not noticed Bette being the sweet woman she always was.
“Shit, Baby. I…I’m sorry. I…”
“It’s really no big deal, Tee.”
Bette Franklin smiled at her.
“No big deal!” Alice interjected. “Are you insa…”
