The Absence of One chapter 9

By the time Shane had returned to Bette’s house, dinner was winding down. If everyone were surprised to see her back here, no one said anything. Her visiting Tina was the pink elephant in the room, Shane knew.

Guided by Kit, Shane mindlessly grabbed the plate set aside for her. She sat down next to the older Porter, glancing around the room to find the other Porter missing.

    “Where’s Bette?”

“She’s putting Angelica to bed. Alice is helping her,” Kit offered.

    “And Shay, too,” Angus added.

Kit beamed at the mention of the boy. “Shane, your brother is so adorable. He was running around like a little old lady, helping Bette take care of my Boo.”

“My Shay? My brother Shay?” Shane raised her eyebrow.

“Your brother is better at taking care of Angie than me,” Alice piped in as she sat down next to Helena. “At least, that’s what Bette said to shoo me out of the baby room.”

“Can you blame my baby sister? You’re just gonna make her all excited and it’ll be ages before she calms down enough to sleep.”

Alice pouted. “Hey, I can’t help my bubbly personality.”

“Yes, Alice, and we all love you for it,” Helena reached over to pat the blonde on her back.

“See, at least somebody appreciates me.”

Kit laughed, shaking her head in amusement. If nothing else, Alice was a bright presence in their group.

“Who doesn’t appreciate you?” Bette teased as she entered the dining area with Shay in tow.

“Hey little man,” Shane grinned at her brother, welcoming the enthusiastic hug. “Did you enjoy yourself?”

“Absolutely. Bette and I read a story to Angelica and then I get watch her sing a lullaby to Angelica and then she fell asleep,” his words come out in a rush.

“Training a new babysitter, Bette?” Alice smirked.

Kit and Angus shared a knowing smile. Despite her baby sister’s insistence that she was helpless when it came to kids, Kit knew otherwise.

Bette turned in her seat, facing the siblings next to her. “You’ve been a big help tonight, Shay. Thanks.”

The little boy blushed when Bette placed a kiss on his forehead. He looked to his sister for help, feeling shy and proud at the same time.
