The Absence of One chapter 6
“Whatever it is you want to ask, go ahead,” Bette’s voice broke the silence. “Let me guess, you want to ask about Tina but you don’t want to pry.”
“Uh yeah, something like that,” Shane stammered. “Just… last night you two…”
“We weren’t on our best behaviors last night, weren’t we?” Bette sighed. “That woman is just so good at pushing my buttons.”
“Yeah, that much is obvious.”
Bette turned around in the lounge chair, resting her elbows on her knees. She looked down at her hands, focusing on where her ring used to be.
“We had a fight at the parking lot,” Bette began. “She accused me of flaunting my singlehood. We said some pretty nasty things to each other.”
“But it’s not the end of the world, right? I mean, she did hand over Angelica to you this morning,” Shane reasoned.
“Yeah, and threw Henry at my face,” Bette didn’t bother to hide the malice in her voice.
“I’m sorry,” the younger woman frowned.
“She did it to me twice, Shane. Twice, within 24 hours. How long more do I have to pay for my mistakes?”
Before Shane could reply, approaching footsteps alerted them they were no longer the only adults around. An emotional Bette went into the house on the pretense of checking on Angelica, but Shane knew the woman needed time to regroup.
“Hey guys,” Shane acknowledged the group as they began to trickle in. “Bette’s inside checking on Angie.”
“Is she asleep?” Angus asked.
“Yeah, but I think she should be up by now,” Shane shrugged. Babies were not her forte.
“I’ll go look for my baby sis and my Boo,” Kit told them as she hurried into the house with Angus.
“Come on, Alice, aren’t you going to help me with these?” Helena teased her roommate as she held up the bags.
Glaring at Helena, Alice grabbed a few bags off her hand and followed Kit’s footsteps. Helena tagged behind slowly, her steps careful. She wasn’t public enemy No. 1 anymore, but some memories were hard to forget.
“Here goes nothing,” Helena muttered as Bette caught sight of her.

Am enjoying this – nice group dynamics. Tina and Henry need to travel far away…
Tina needs to get her self together and stop hurting Bette with Henry I believe that Henry was sucker into this thing with Tina. Bette has Angie and someone will come into her life and things will get back to near normal for her. thanks
Always love when the group get together. The girls need to drag Bette out to meet other women. Definitely time for her to date.
I’m with Probie, i love the group together. Bette needs to get out and have fun. Sure its great to have Angie, but when she isnt there it will get lonely. I hope someone fills that void for Bette, and soon. I’m wondering if your leaning towards Helena being that person, dont know how i feel about that :/ but i would read anyways :D Tina needs to stop shoving Henry in Bette’s face b/c a time might come when Bette has someone to shove in her face. Thanks for the post, PPS.
Poor Bette, Tina need to dump hendick and get back to Bette!
