The Absence of One chapter 37

    “What?” Bette frowned.

“Tell me you don’t love me anymore, and I’ll leave right now,” Tina challenged her.

Bette turned away, her gaze captivated by the calm waters in the pool. The silence was punctuated by passing cars, yet she hadn’t bothered to reply.

“Neither of us can say that, Bette,” Tina took hesitant steps toward Bette. “We can’t, because it’s not true.”

The taller woman remained still. “I know it’s not true, but that doesn’t mean it’s the same, Tina. So much has happened, so much we’ve been through.”

“Yes, that love has changed, but it’s for the better.” She stood right behind Bette, feeling the tension roll off her shoulders. “Look at what we’re doing now; we’re talking instead of avoiding it.”

“Once upon a time, we were doing that,” Bette replied softly. She could feel her resolve wavering. “Over time, we lost our way and went separate directions.”

Her breaths were short, labored. She was finding it hard to stay calm. “Don’t dwell on the past, Bette. Life is much happier when you let the past stay in the past.”

The slow, deep inhale of breath was akin to the other shoe to fall. “I’ve been trying to do that, Tina, but you just wouldn’t let me.”

Tina’s body froze at Bette’s answer. It was as though the vice grip on her heart loosened, causing her heart rate to skyrocket. Tina closed in on the woman, circling her arms around Bette’s waist. “That’s because I’m trying to prevent you from making a mistake.”

Shocked at the contact, Bette made no move to break their embrace. Her body overtook her mind. It was homecoming for her senses. “Tina.”

All those nights they spent in this position, all the memories of their love, flooded their conscious. Their body fitted perfectly, despite their time apart. Tina could feel the slight tremble from the body in her arms.

“We need to work things out, Bette, not move on,” Tina whispered against Bette’s shoulder.

Bette swallowed, hard. “Is that what we’re doing right now?”

“Fixing our mistake? Yes,” Tina tightened her hold on Bette.

“I guess first step is always the hardest.”

Tina hummed her agreement. Her body was enjoying its proximity to Bette; she could feel Bette’s racing pulse. Despite their height difference, she was content to stay in their embrace.

“It’s what we should have done all those years ago.”

She closed her eyes, and hung her head low. Bette knew it was foolish of her to dwell on mistakes. It was something Melvin always focused on, no matter what her achievement. Just as quickly, she shook her head to chase the ghost of Melvin away. She didn’t need Melvin in her head at this moment.

When Bette felt Tina’s arms move, she turned around to regard the blonde. There was no pressing matters to attend to, no phone calls claiming nervous breakdowns. Both women were left to their own devices.

A soft hand caressed gentle cheek, tracing a long familiar path. The resulting sigh was as comforting as the gesture that prompted it in the first place.

“Please, Bette,” Tina’s words were whispered. “Give us a chance again.”

She tilted her head, leaning into Tina’s caress. Bette kept her eyes closed; the sensations were keeping everything else at bay. On their own accord, her hands snaked around Tina’s waist.

The scent that enveloped her senses was enough to tighten her hold on Tina. Her eyes slowly opened. “I should talk to Barbara.”

“What?” Bette’s words brought the moment of bliss into a screeching halt. “Why?”

“Yes, Bette, do explain,” a new voice, strong, drifted into the living room.

    Well, fuck.

    1. this was awesome, luv it but please dont put bette n tina back as yet, keep her w/ the senator, its a promising relationship..n i luv bette’s strength in this story

    2. Oops, looks like Barbara wasn’t so far away after all. Glad that Bette stopped things before they got out of control. I hope Tina doesn’t do anything rash like run because it may break Bette’s heart. I am so glad that Tina fought for Bette and didn’t give up. I will be looking for the next chapter as I am sure the drama is about to commence.

    3. Why should she talk to Barbara. Bette has to make the decision to go back to Tina it’s not Barbara’s decision. Bette needs to go back to Tina.

    4. Ok Bette let talk to barbara and tell her that you don’t want to see her again and please go aways, cause you and Tina are back together now. Please post more, thanks!

    5. Finally…. I love this story although Bette’s pairing with the senator drives me crazy. I see them more as a fling, not a relationship. Hope to see B&T work their way back.

    6. I’ve always loved the potential pairing of Bette and the Senator. It was hot and the Senator was definitely a good match for Bette. She would challenge Bette. But I also love Bette w/Tina. What’s a girl to do??? PPS. You’ve been missed.

    7. “Well, fuck.” Indeed, couldn’t agree more…I can only assume that the Senator has made her way back to WeHo? Perhaps if there were no Tina, I could back a new pairing for Bette…Bette really does need to remember to not dwell on mistakes like Melvin did…Thx for this and hope you give us another one soon!

    8. Bette and Tina belong together. Yes, Bette has had a fling with Barbara, however, her heart is with Tina and always will be. Please let B and T work this out.

    9. awww I was hoping that Bette would be strong enough to stay away from Tina. Her relationship with Barbara seemed to help her get some confidence back. Love the story tho, thanks for posting.

    10. Couldn´t agree more – it´s so easy to fall back on what you know instead of risking something new – The senator is good for Bette

    11. hrmmm. So… this talking to Barbara… who’s going to come out the rueful loser? Bette certainly hasn’t given Tina a definite yes or no. I’ll just be waiting on the next post, sky. Thanks
