The Absence of One chapter 33

“I’ve got budget meetings most of the week then Angie’s spending the weekend with me. Why?”

“Shane’s thinking about taking Shay to Sea World. You can bring Angelica and we can make a weekend out of it.”

“Oh,” Bette pondered on the idea. “I’ll check my schedule.”

Alice nodded. “Let me know soon.”

“Remember the last time we went to San Diego?” Bette chuckled when she heard Alice’s groan. “That was a fun trip.”

“Don’t remind me. My body’s still recovering from the hangover of San Diego.”

She took her time to finish her plate, a small smile tugging on her lips as she watched Alice work through her food. It was rare the two of them had a meal by themselves and the opportunity was a cherished affair.

“We haven’t spent time like this in awhile,” Bette’s words were more of a statement than question.

The blonde nodded, shifting her gaze away to the crowd around them. Bette understood Alice’s need to gather her thoughts, and gladly indulged her friend.

“Yeah,” Alice’s answer was barely audible, but the message was heard by its intended recipient. “It’s ok. I’ll always be here to remind you.”

“I haven’t been a friend, have I? Maybe you should revoke my best friend credentials,” Bette joked.

“Not this lifetime. I have plans for you and Porter 2.0,” Alice winked.

“You’re not turning her into a child star,” Bette warned.

“And that’s different from you wanting to send her to an overpriced playschool?” the blonde countered.

Bette was surprised. “Tina told you.”

Alice nodded slowly. “Yesterday. We talked after lunch for a bit. I happen to agree with her.”

“That I’m a dysfunctional psycho?” She was quickly becoming annoyed.

“There’s no need to punish my poor Angelica any more than what she already is going through.”

“What?” Bette’s voice rattled off the walls. It brought the restaurant to a standstill.

Shit. Think fast, Alice. “Bette, why does she need … no. Why do you want her to go there?”

    “Their curriculum is impressive.”

    “Try again,” Alice shot back.

Bette huffed. “Angie will get a head start in life with that school. You, of all people, should understand the value of contacts.”

    1. Bette, do you or don’t you? Will you or won’t you? Do you want Barbara or Tina? Don’t play with Barbara and tell Tina you’re moving on, if that’s not what you really want, woman. Decide! Great to see you back, skydiver, post when you can. Thanks
