The Absence of One chapter 17

Barbara stayed silent, letting the other woman compose her thoughts. She gripped the cup in her hand a little tighter, not wanting to let her nervousness show.

“But she’s not my wife anymore,” Bette finally voiced the pink elephant in the room.

“You don’t have to do this if you’re not ready,” Barbara set the cup down and reached for Bette’s free hand. “I’m not going anywhere.”

“I shouldn’t be unloading all this on you,” Bette smiled sadly.

    “Bette.”

The soft whisper was her undoing. With just one word, Barbara had conveyed to her that she understood, that they were navigating through something deeper than lust.

“Things have been settling down slowly, but at least it was a start,” Bette cast her gaze downward. “Then the group went out for dinner and Tina was there. It got worse when we were at the Planet. I reckon when you saw me and Tina, we were having a fight.”

She scooted closer to Bette, wanting to be as near to her as possible. “Did something else happen?”

Bette nodded. “Tina came over Sunday and we talked.”

Barbara tried to hide the slight worry coursing through her mind. She clamped down on her fears, knowing she wanted to hear out Bette.

She tugged on Bette’s hand, engulfing the woman in a hug. They stayed that way for some time, until Barbara felt Bette tightening her hold. Moving so they both would be more comfortable, the former senator had Bette half-lying on her, resting her head on her shoulders.

Their embrace was acutely intimate, yet it was a source of comfort for both. “It’s so hard to let go. I thought it would be easier with time, but it never works out. I had my heart broken twice.”

“I’m sorry you had to go through it,” Barbara ached for the woman in her arms.

“I thought I was going to die the first time she left,” Bette mumbled. “The second time… it destroyed my whole world.”

“You’re stronger now, Bette. Look how far you’ve come along.”

“I’m not,” Bette refuted. “I wasn’t strong enough. To resist temptations, to take care of my family, to do the right thing.”

“Bette, admitting you made a mistake and trying to fix it shows me your strength,” the woman countered. “It takes a big person to admit their faults.”

    1. Nice post sky! Good for Bette for taking it slow, being honest, and talking about it. Bette will need to be truthful with Tina about Barbara as she has been with Barbara about Tina. Tina won’t like it, but she will have to deal if she wants Bette’s love. I do believe that Barbara has a “more than lust” feeling for Bette, but then again who doesn’t?! LOL! I hope B&T have some great quality family time with Angie on Wednesday. Thanks sky!

    2. I’m sooo torn! Give Tina a chance or … give that chance to the Sultry Senator…hmmmm It’s in your hands, my dear…it’s in your hands!
