Talk to Me of Mendocino ~ Chapter 8

“I assume that she didn’t mean it as a compliment.”

“Well, I took it as one.”

    “I don’t want to smother her, but I can’t …”

“She used ‘smother’ with you, too?  Look, T, there isn’t any handbook for this.  You can’t go online and do a search for ‘how to protect your family when an anonymous crackpot sends threatening letters because you produced a documentary critical of the religious cult to which his family belongs.’”

“They’re not even sure that’s who it is,” Tina said, her frustration evident. “There hasn’t been a new letter in 18 months.”

“Who are you trying to convince?”

“I’m just wondering if I’m going overboard.”

“Because Angie says so?  I’d rather have her grumble and hate us until she’s old enough to understand,”

    “Dammit, Bette.  She’s 23.”

“It’s a relief, Tina.  She’s always so mature around Raph and Meka.  I’m glad to see that there is some brat in there somewhere.”

“How long before she forgives us?”

    “Probably years.”

    “Yeah.”

“Hey, you’re the one who took all of this on again.”

“I did.  She’s wonderful. Just perfect. And that’s my unbiased opinion.”

“And your opinion is astute.  She is beautiful.  Angie forwarded some photos.  She’s taking this better than she took Raph’s birth.”

“Probably because she doesn’t live at home.”

“ Send more recent photos when you can.”

“That’s a dangerous request to a new mother.”

“I’d love to see the pictures,” Bette assured Tina.  “I’m so happy for you.  You have always been  a wonderful mother.”

“Thank you.  That means a lot to me.”

“It’s true.  Serafina is a lovely name.”

“It’s an angel name, like you did with Raphael and Mekalya.”

Guilt suddenly stabbed Tina.  She had hired a security guard for Angelica when she had realized that the symposium was only two hour’s drive from the cult’s old headquarters.  Anyone bent on hurting her would have enough information to connect Angie with Jodie Lerner.  Tina was worried enough that she had ordered another guard for Serafina.  However, it had been almost five years since the last threat and she had forgotten her promise to Bette and Jodi to protect Meka and Raph whenever they were with Angie and Angie had protection.  Tina reached for the phone and arranged for two additional teams.

Tina called her office and told them of her change in location.  She continued with the lease of the home, in case she changed her mind and to also house the security teams and Andrew.

Just them her phone rang, the tone indicating that it was her New York assistant.  Their call was brief.

“I need you to bring some things from the apartment upstate.  Pack a bag for yourself since you’ll stay here in case I need any help.”

Tina could hear Andrew’s moment of hesitation, and she felt her annoyance begin to form.  Andrew, though, snapped to reality just in time to avoid Tina’s snark.

“I’ll be there in four hours.”

Tina had been busy so her thoughts had not strayed.  Her worry about going to the lodge, though, returned as her activity slowed.  She called her office to research the symposium events.  Angelica had complained that the special family dinner that night had spun out of control and had become a semi-official function.  Tina knew that Fina would be invited.  She wondered if she should allow her to attend, and if her younger daughter attended, if she would be expected to attend too.

Tina concluded that it had been a mistake to come.  She promised herself that she would stay occupied and not let her thoughts stray.  She looked around the room and decided that the nanny should pack up.  She had gotten them in the mess and Tina would get some satisfaction from the small punishment.

    1. Hey! Missed your posting and am happy to have gone on line at work (in a fit of frustration over some work-related nonsense and a sudden need to escape into LWord land fantasy) to find you had posted. Thanks for the character listing and ages– does this mean that Tina birthed Serafina at 57? Yikes. Perhaps a younger lover or a surrogate but, hey, the miracles of modern science… And she’s single now, right? You can see I am too lazy to go back and read! I am loving this story and love the idea of an older B&T–I know it just gets better! Owe you a call after the Book Expo-I am insanely busy until next week. Take good care. Lin

    2. Hmmm…a rather hard-bitten Tina, but understandable given the threats she’s lived with. But does that account for the pettiness that shines through from time to time?

    3. I have been waiting for your next update on this story!!! I am hooked…truly and completely hooked! Tina has a five year old at age 62?! Yikes!!! LOL Thanks…please hurry with the next chapter…please.

    4. I have missed this story as well. Thank you for updating. Really really am liking this story and all the assortment of characters. Thank you :)

    5. Death threats… I don’t like that at all. I’m glad Tina’s wealthy enough to hire security, though. Her assistant, living on a cushy salary and in a cushy flat, really is in the position to have to jump when Tina says. He did well there to remember what he’s paid to do, but it would have been funny to see full-on Alpha Tina. I’m really glad you’ve posted, Spumoni, thanks. :)

    6. Hey Spumoni!!! I just LOVE this story … thanks, too, for the cast of characters. I was SOO off on the kids’ ages. Hope you’re feelin’ better! PPS (as soon as you can)!

    7. Hi, dear sweet Spumoni! Uhm… Indeed it is sad to see how Tina has become such a snob, on her mature years. Plus, it is a shame that she is so seclusive and uptight. We understand that the death threats could contribute to the latter, but she has missed being social. We truly admire Angie’s resolve to succeed in New York, independent to her mom’s famous name. It seems Bette has kept her cool and has grown into a more grounded person. We love that fact. We are glad that the interaction between all brothers remains in good terms. Ah, dearest friend, we are SO hooked here. Hahaha Yep. This update was AMAZING. PPS Hugs & kisses on both your cheeks.- Lu & Marsh (Proud Salsa Aunties to the ever loving JC and Eunichick and Tias Adoradas to Patpez)
