    February 14, 11:45 a.m., West Hollywood

Bill’s arms were growing tired from carrying the heavy vase of roses.  He had underestimated how long a walk it was from the florist to the Porter’s home and he was cursing himself for not having brought the car.

He smiled at his skipping daughter, who carried a bouquet of pink and white sweetheart roses.  The purple ribbons that held the stems in place fluttered as the little girl moved.

    “Bette’s prettier than me, Daddy.”

Bill heard insecurity in his daughter’s voice.  “Impossible.”

    “She is.”

“I don’t believe that’s possible because you are the prettiest girl in the whole wide world.”

As the father and daughter walked, Bill noticed that the houses were getting larger and larger and began to wonder about the Porter family they were about to visit.  He glanced down at the rumpled chinos and faded Villanova sweatshirt he wore and wished he had taken a few more minutes that morning to find an ironed pair of pants and a sweater.

Tina’s chattering, though, pulled him out of that moment of doubt and he smiled at the happy girl.

    “What did you say, pumpkin?”

“Daddy!  You weren’t listening,” the little girl pouted.

“I’m sorry.  Daddy was just thinking about whether we were close to the Porter house.”

    “Are we close?”

“Very. Now, tell me what you said.”

    “No.”

    “Please?”

    “No.  You weren’t listening.”

    “Please?”

    “No.”

    “OK.”

    “You don’t want to know?”

“But you don’t want to tell me.”

“If I’d tell you would you want to know?”

“Yes, if you would tell me, I would want to know.”

“Dana says that I should get riding lessons like she does.  She told me about the pretty pony she has and that there is another pony for me to ride.  Do you think that if Bette is my Valentine, she’ll want to come for riding lessons, too?  Dana didn’t say anything about there being another pony that Bette could have.”

    1. Spumoni, when I see there’s an update from you I can’t wait to read your Author’s notes and the story. You didn’t dissapoint this time. I enjoyed both so very much. Thank you for this wonderful story.

    2. i love this story… but i’m growing old waiting them to meet… lol… melvin is not a nice man… and i’m glad tina at this young age was not scared off by him… ok we are all here waiying for your next post… pps

    3. You know, if your daughter’s friend DOES read L Word FF, I have a feeling someone’s going to get told off for all of these stories that keep surfacing… I would look into alternate aliases. Cadogan worked well, I think. Spumogan, even. Now, because you already now how much I utterly adore teenage Kit (because I do), I won’t repeat that. No. I will instead tell you that I love Bill. He reminds me of my dad… well, before I turned into exactly him and our relationship cracked a bit. But still, he would have done that. So yeah, Bill + Kit = Major WIN! (Sergeant Win? LOL). Anyway, you crack me up, woman. I’m so glad every time I see an update, that not even my crazy schedule can stop me from reading it. Oh, one more question, did you ever attempt to beat up or lecture the other 7 children who refused to give the eldest, non-germified-binky-consuming child Valentines? It somehow sounds like something you’d attempt to improve upon the strategy’s results.

    4. Spumoni… you crack me up, woman. I hope these two meet up at some point and exchange Valentines, or else I think wee B&T might explode. As patient as Kit and Bill are being, I’m not sure if they’re up to handling pint-sized heartbreak. thanks for the post!

    5. They always seemed to be a step behind or in front of each other. I can’t wait for the moment they actually come face to face. Mr. Porter scares me to death, I will take the Kennards over Mr. Porter any day.

    6. This story is very cute, but you are torturing us readers, I love the scene in the previous chapter with Tina in the flower shop and Bette buying the stuffed unicorn, and the reactions by Bill and Kit were precious when the girls reveal their Valentine’s. I can’t wait for their actual meeting. Your stories are good for the soul. THANK YOU!!

    7. LOL This story is adorable! No wonder Bette and Tina’s communication sucks as adults…it’s been that way from the beginning! LOL Thanks!! And thanks for the great author’s notes. :-)

    8. Damn, Spumoni, I know it’s too late to have you be this middle aged cynic’s Valentine, but I so look forward to your notes. Could you perhaps get an account at LiveJournal so we can follow your musings, whether or not you have a story going?

    9. What a difference between the Kennards and Melvin. He is so curmudgeonly. Your AN is a hoot and very delightful. You’re an excellent storyteller.

    10. Spumoni…you need to put warning signs for your AN’s. I laughed so hard that 1) the dogs came a running to find out what’s going on 2) nearly had to go pee…laughed that hard! Germ phobia. ROFL! You are a stitch!BTW: You are killin me with the missing of each other. Glad that Tina is so positive since Mr. P is a grouch. Please let them meet upon Feb 14th…c’mon Spumoni…let that romantic heart of your’s write young love.

    11. You’re not gonna make them continue missing each other to torture us, right? Can’t wait to see what happens next. Is it bad that I was actually hoping that Tina would tell Melvin that she wanted to make Bette her Valentine so that the old scrooge would have a heart attack, keel over and die? I know, bad right? But I quickly squashed this morbid train of thought, don’t worry.. cause if that ever happened, then this story will stop being about cute TiBette and segue into the dark and twisty TiBette of S2 *shudder*. And I love cute TiBette, especially if you were the one writing them. So.. carry on great Spumoni (I want another update.. stat! Demanding much? Lol). Till the next one.. :)

    12. damn…are you kidding? the girls will keep missing each other…you are killing me here…btw, love your author’s notes as well, you always make everything really enjoyable…just those little girls together, please

    13. Fantastically funny AN and the story is so damned sweet and cute, as are the girls. Happy that Tinas’ parents have good sense and good manners. I was so hoping that Melvin would not be an asshole in this story but he is as always a superb intimidating asshole. Please let them exchange cards and gifts at Tinas’ house so she and her father won’t have to go back to Bettes’ house and talk to Melvin again. Nice people should not have to deal with Melvin, ever. He’s ever only going to be an ugly person to deal with. Thanks for posting.

    14. The suspense is killing me!! Please have them meet up either at Tina’s house or on the sidewalk if they decide to walk back home!! I don’t want Tina OR her father to have to deal with Melvin the old fart again!! I love this story!

    15. This is just to say my cheeks hurt from smiling so hard while reading your last three posts. =) Thanks a bunch, Spumoni, for helping me stretch out my facial muscles to the limit and of course, my sugar fix. =) Little TiBette are so lucky the store attendants they met are not as stiff as Melvin. I can’t wait for their face-to-face sidewalk, porch or balcony scene. Btw, this sweet little tale will be sweeter and lovelier if the smitten little girls will really end up as each other’s forever Valentine in a flash-forward scene 10 or 12 years later. It’s just a thought. Thanks again, Spumoni. The fluff that this story and geegee’s uber sweet epilogue supply will tide me over for a while. P.S. Your author notes are hilarious! Self-deprecating humor + deadpan delivery = comedy gold. Cheers! =)

    16. I already said it lol, don’t know if I enjoy more your AN than the story lol. Your AN was so funny. Recorded at the time and shown now would have been more hilarous pmsl.
