    Standing Still

“How do you recall it?” Alice hadn’t spoken to Dana in what felt like a life time – and that was too long. Their un-official reunion at The Planet created a strong sense of nostalgia to intoxicate their thoughts. ”Dane, I’m asking you a question,” Dana apologized, temporarily distracted by the jazz rythm playing through the speakers. “The first time we met?” Alice nodded and laughed at Dana’s awkwardness, something she had grown to love and begun to miss. “Where do I begin?” Clearing her throat, Dana felt a little nervous. She knew that speaking about this would cause an eruption of feelings she’d tried so desperately to hide. “Well?” Alice’s persistant nature still amused her. “Ok, ok.,” Dana began. ”Let’s see, I remember we were at Bette and Tina’s, I’d met Tina at Radar the night before and I found her so welcoming. Anyway, she invited me over – I only came because I was new in town, and wanted to make some friends.” Alice smirked, “You mean, meet some ladies?” Dana frowned, Alice quickly brushing her friends hand in reassurance. “Go on.” “Well, ofcourse I arrived alone, the place was full, and the uncomfortable introductions began. It was strange, everyone knew everyone – except me.” Alice gave Dana a genuinely sympathetic look. “I guess at this point I’d met Shane and thought, ‘woah, easy tiger.’ Alice laughed, “Did she hit on you?” Dana almost spat out her O.J. “No, no, well, kinda, I dunno!” A roar of laughter at the table caused a few people to look around. Alice smiled cheekily at Dana, “Please continue.” “Then I saw you.” Alice felt a lump in her throat, not knowing what Dana would say next. “You appraoched me with a kind smile and introduced yourself. You were wearing such casual clothing but I thought you were glamorous.” Yes, there was a definite lump in Alice’s throat. ” You shook my hand and I guess I felt a certain chemistry. Like I wished in that moment that the electricity between people was visible. That you could see sparks pass between two people. It wouldv’e made things so much easier.” Dana’s voice became quiet. “The rest of the evening was a bit blurry, I remember stumbling home around midnight. Thinking of you. I knew we’d be friends, I just didn’t know how strong the sparks between us would grow.”

Alice noticed Dana’s regretful tone and broke the ice by ordering more drinks. “You knew when you first met me that we’d end up, at some point… lovers?” Dana looked directly into Alice’s eyes. ”I didn’t know, I hoped. I mean I knew our hugs would always linger a little longer than they should have. Sometimes, I’d find myself looking at you, and my eyes would find their way over your body…” Alice was a little taken back, expecting the question to make Dana a little awkard. “The night you first kissed me, you know – when Tonya was home? I felt the same way that night you shook my hand at Bette and Tina’s” Alice smiled, feeling tears well in her eyes. “The first time we made love, how did that make you feel -” Dana rose to her feet. “Do you want to finish this conversation at my place?” Alice nodded, following in Dana’s footsteps.

A million and one thoughts passed the time it took to arrive at Dana’s. Alice’s eyes traced over every part of Dana’s body as they walked, she is just as beautiful clothed as she is naked. Dana, walking ahead, could feel Alice’s eyes burning onto her skin. The sensation reminiscent of the times they’d make love, and Alice would tease Dana by licking her lips, exploring her every curve with her seductive stare.

“Finally,” Dana joked, fiddling for her keys. The sun was going down and the evening air caused Dana’s senses to stir. This is where we first kissed. Dana wondered if Alice was thinking the same thing. “Dane, Dana, look at me.” Dana turned nervously towards Alice. Their eyes piercing eachother in intense longing. “God,” Alice groaned. “When you look at me like that, I can feel my heart tighten, I can barely breathe,” Dana’s vulnerable expression caused Alice to melt. “Open the door Dana,” Alice ordered,  trying so hard to fight the feelings between them. The battle would be hard, as she could already feel herself surrender. Dana’s home was always so neat and tidy, a clear contrast to her bedroom, though Alice hadn’t tread that territory in a while. “Would you like a drink? Dana asked in an uncertain tone. The lounge room was dark, moonlight seeped through the gaps in the curtains. The light shone over Alice’s face, and Dana could no longer fight it. Moving closer to Alice, Dana tilted her chin toward the ceiling, swallowing hard. “I know alot has happened. People have come and gone from our lives. But through every smile and heartbreak, it’s always you and me, standing before eachother like this. Alice moved in towards Dana, their lips a whisper apart. “Give me your hand,” Dana obliged, closing her eyes awaiting the next command. “What do you feel?” Alice asked in a husky voice. Dana knew what this was, Alice was reminding her of the feeling when they first met.  Before she could open her eyes, Alice felt Dana’s lips on her own. The feeling of sparks and electricity came rushing thorugh her veins, as their kiss grew more fierce with it’s direction. Dana had always thought that Alice held a magnifying glass over her heart, the drama and intensity of her emotion was so visible. But in this moment, in this feeling, Dana realized she had suffered the same as Alice. They had torchured themselves being apart. Coming to realize, they would somehow always, end up together.
