So it repeats. I am here, waylaid. Somewhere along
the track, gravity reached up and tripped me, and I fell. How did it
happen? When did it happen? I don’t even know. All I know is that she
    is gone.

    *****

Bette stared out the bedroom window, counting lights
as they went on in the far horizon. She wondered what life was like out
there on the other side of town. She wondered in particular about a
certain life, a life that went on without her. As each light came on,
she couldn’t help but wonder if it was Tina’s hand that turned it on.
Tina, who had left her. Tina who could live without her while Bette
regressed to her most basic state, that of a child counting minutes.

“Please, Bette. I have to go. Don’t make this harder than it has to be…”

Bette put a trembling hand against her ear, wishing
she hadn’t heard those words. How long ago has it been? How long ago
since Tina promised a lifetime? Was she lying then? Did she lie about
everything? Was she lying the first time she held me and told me
‘always’? Was it all a lie?

“We can’t go on like this, Bette.”

Maybe that was the only time she told the truth.

“It seems like we only hurt each other when we’re together. I don’t want to live like this anymore.”

Neither do I! Bette had felt like screaming. But
pain coagulated in her throat. She could not speak, could not move past
    a hand raised in supplication.

    “Don’t leave me…”

Bette pressed her cheek against the cold window
pane. She hated how she had begged. She hated how that last whispered
plea caused Tina to turn away finally. She hated how when Tina
walked out the front door, she had wailed. Her face burned, stung that
that last humiliation would forever be burned in her mind. Tina. Tina
might also remember how she had been pathetic in her need… years from
now Tina would laugh at the crazy woman she had once lived with. Years
from now, Bette would have hardened her heart enough to not feel pain
    each time she breathed.

Bette took a deep breath. The time for crying has
passed, she steeled herself. I’m still here. Still here without you.

While you switch on that light, I’m still here.
While you unfold yourself on your bed, I’m still here. While you close
your eyes and think over your day, I’m still here. While you remember
me as your greatest mistake, I’m. Still. Here.

    1. remember tb saver our dearly departed writer who cherished our girls t and b find a way to bring them together for her and us–sorry just a bummer day for me

    2. Any chance of taking this and running with it as a separate yet connected story to “I Fall Behind?” It would make for an interesting dream. And hey, angst can be good. We all should be allowed to be a little emo now and then.

    3. Wow how did they get there? Did the insecurity that Bette walks with daily finally become more than Tina could carry for Bette or did Tina finally grow beyond the need to help her. Thanks for this as sad as it is.

    4. Comon ppl..read the author’s notes. 7PM did say that she would make up for it…this is just how she wanted the stroy to go…but like so many others, after a while the stories take on a life of their own and the author’s left to just flesh it out.Keep posting 7PM…somehow a somewhat ‘off’ Bette is a more honest Bette.

    5. hey T, remember? it’s me, B…:) how did you got here from the witty and fun and loving chapters of I fall behind? this was so sad indeed but still as beautiful…i’m glad you’ve chosen the other path in your awesome story…bring more of B&T happiness….thanks
