    Someone I Once Knew

    A strange equation, and an altogether too-common belief: One’s worth is exponentially increased with one’s incremental disappearance.

    Someone I Once Knew: Part Two

    ~~~
    One, two, three four.
    The magic number. When Bette hit that number of drinks that’s when the trouble started. She could hear Tina yelling in the background; but didn’t make sense of anything she heard. The room shifted and Tina’s voice was piercing Bette’s ears.
    “Please…for one minute…shut…up!” Bette managed to say. But Tina continued, this time Bette stood up and listened to her words.
    Tina didn’t hold back any of her feelings. Every insult, everything she thought about what Bette was doing herself, to their family. The words hit Bette harder and harder. Her efforts to tell Tina to stop were futile and Tina continued. Then something snapped within Bette, before she knew it her hand slapped Tina’s face with enough force that Tina was on the ground within seconds.
    Bette looked down at her wife; her face…the look on her face would forever be burned into her memory.
    Bette felt a cool liquid travel down her leg.  Her eyes shot open and saw her drink had tipped into her lap. “Shit…” She stood up and walked into the bedroom; with what was left of her drink in hand. The room slowly shifted with every step she took. Bette removed her clothing and slipped under the covers, too tired to get her pajamas on.
    Tina had just made some phone calls, still looking for an apartment. When Angelica saw her mother off the phone she sat on the couch in the living room next to her.
    “Who were all of those calls to?” Angie asked.
    “I was just calling about setting up a tour of places for us to go to…”
    “Why would you do that? I thought we were just staying here until you and Mama stopped fighting.”
    “Sweetie…this just isn’t about us fighting…it’s so much more. And I don’t want to inconvenience your Aunt much longer with us staying here.” Just as she finished Tina’s phone rang. “Sorry babe I need to take this…Hello?”
    Angelica rolled her eyes and got up from the couch and walked to the guest room she was staying in. She grabbed her cell phone from her purse and dialed her best friend Kylie, but there was no answer.
    1. Oh my Bette as an alcoholic, what a mess. She will be a superb alcoholic as she does with most things she will throw herself completely into as it seems she has done. But, to hit Tina, don’t think she would have done that unless she is really too far gone with this addiction. she’s gotta pull herself together and no one better to help than Kit. BIG problem #2 is Angie with the weight loss thing. Please don’t let her become anorexic or buelemic(sp). That is one thing that will pull Bette out of that downward spiral into the bottle. Tina’s gonna have anxiety problems with all of it. Gosh, what a plate full of problems they will have to deal with. Very interesting. Hope everything goes well with you and your health. Post when you can.
    2. Hey Lady, I’ll going to talk off line about your AN’s, but for the story it is brilliant as ever. You are doing a fantastic job writing a very dark area of lives here. We have witnessed a reactive side of Bette where she struck Tina, an act I am certain she must be ashamed of. We see the drinking problem, and I worry about Angie’s focus on her weight at this young age. Hmmm…yep, you once again have me thinking girl. TTYS. Thanks so much for posting. xo
    3. Coffee, you are showing us, very realisticaly, how personal low self esteem may drive people to do the unthinkable, i.e. drink alcohol, take anti-depressants, etc. Unfortunately, this is only a temporary escape from problems. However, the consequences of such actions, strike families very deep. In this case, we have seen Tina has lost her patience and the right way to communicate with Bette. Bette is in such a dark place, that it will require all the love of her family, Kit’s help and also some external theraphy. Her slap to Tina cannot be justified. She is completely out of control.- Angie, on the other hand, is suffering the break up of her family and is trying to reach an “invisible” mode, in order to avoid being “abandoned” by her momma T. Apparently, Tina is transmitting that message to her. Very insteresting and poignant plot, Coffee. Please continue, as much as you can. Sincerely, Lucero & Marsha (JC’s Salsa Aunties from Mexico City)
    4. If someone doesn’t really pay attention to Angie she is going to go the family way in addiction. This story is so very sad. Brilliant and amazing writing.
    5. Kit, Bette and now Angie may use other ways to lose weight, that are not good. Hopefully, Kit can get Bette to sober up so that they can be there for Angie and for Tina.
    6. Coffee another well written chapter.I just hope that Angie doesn’t turn to diet pills to lose weight.Addiction can run in families.Be well.
    7. Hey CoffeeStained, Great to have you back and posting this tyhought provoking tale. Alcoholism is such a terrible, insidious disease. It destroys those we love the most and ourselves. I do hope that Kit can help Bette out of this mess. Bette has to may the choices herself and will need all the love and support her sister can offer. In the part of Angie, I do hope that her need to be small does not lead to anything most sinister… Please continue is intrguing tale soon. Many thanks from Your Loyal Fan.
    8. Oh boy angie is gonna start having problems and that will sober bette up real fast!! still can’t believe bette slapped tina… wowow.. :)PPS
    9. thanks for posting coffee…bette is really going downhill…i hope they could work it out…even though i am having strong feelings about the physical abuse…that would be very hard for me to get past. looking forward to reading more.
