    Snippets of Bliss

"Bette," Tina called out as soon as she opened the front door. She was not optimistic about getting a response, since the house was dark and Bette’s car wasn’t in the driveway. Silence greeted her.

It was a sad indication of their lives over the past couple of months that she knew where to check for a note regarding Bette’s whereabouts. It had been their main form of communication lately. Both were working ridiculous hours, and neither was willing to give up what those hours would result in with respect to professional advancement.

She walked into the kitchen and spotted the note on the table. She read it as she pulled open the door of the fridge to look for possibilities for sustenance.

"Hi T, I came home for an early dinner, but have to go back to the gallery for an important meeting with a nocturnal artist. I’ll be late; don’t wait up. Love, B"

Tina glanced at her watch as she closed the fridge, having found nothing.

‘God I can’t believe it’s after eight o’clock already,’ she thought. She walked into the bathroom to check the medicine cabinet, but thought better of her habit of popping a pill every time she had a little extra stress on her plate. She closed the cabinet and walked back into the kitchen to make some ginger tea. She set the kettle on the flame to boil and walked into the bedroom to change. She emerged moments later to the whistling of the kettle, dressed in yoga tights and a fitted t-shirt. She ignored her briefcase, filled with work that demanded her attention, and instead picked up a magazine to flip through as her tea steeped.

She drank her tea, casually perused the latest fashion trends, and went to bed. She contemplated trying to stay awake, but she also knew from experience that when Bette said she’d be late, she meant it.

Tina didn’t stir when Bette came into the bedroom at one in the morning, having spent more time than even she thought necessary trying to woo an artist to agree to a show at her gallery.

She paused to look at Tina’s sleeping form, beams of moonlight drawn across the expanse of perfect skin on her back.

    1. OK, JKS. This is supposed to be “Snippets of Bliss”! It doesn’t seem like it with this 1st chapter…. But date night is giving me hope and I have faith in you. This “separation” will make their “reunion” all the more sweet and beautiful. Please continue.

    2. Like two ships passing in the night…

Very likely to happen with two highly professional women devoted to their careers.

At least they are aware that it’s happening and not falling victim to self-deception. Even better that Tina wants to grab the bull by the horns and do something about it before it’s too late.

Go on as long as you feel it’s the right course of action. I enjoy your stories whatever direction you take.

    3. Hey JKS…this is suppose to be about bliss right :o)) How about a little phonesex during the week before date night – just an idea….

Love your writing – please keep going.

    4. JKS,

      Bring it on, babes.

I cannot wait for date night.

As for chapter 1 of ¡¥as many as it takes¡¦ is good with me. Hee hee ƒº

Your talent and skills will may this a story to follow and enjoy. I will be here watching and waiting to see wherever this leads.

      Your Loyal Fan.

    5. I had a friend who went through something similar some time back. Both were working at a frenetic pace and personal time was practically non-existent. Their solution? Something like what Tina’s doing. They would plan to have a night out once a week – just the two of them. Melly would carry dinner to Shae’s office when she had to work late. When Melly’s out of town, Shae’d write short love lines to her and stash them in Melly’s clothes so when she was away she’d be surprised by the notes. It was a hard long period – it lasted about 2 years. Yup they’d get frustrated but they always kept the lines of communication open and I think, in the end, that’s what really pulled them through. Don’t know how you’re gonna getthem over this hurdle but you’ve done great so far so I have all confidence in you.

    6. Swim, those girls work too much. Didn’t anybody ever tell them: Nobody ever said on their deathbed, “Gee, wish I’d spent more time at the office”?

And I still love it when Bette gets mad and screams and curses…beatin’ up on the bed now! You’ve got these girls down. Excellent as always, Swim.

    7. Yeah – bring on Date Night!! Ive read the previous story and its nice to have a guess at what B&T’s relationship was like in the early years – keep it going!!
