    Chapter 7 – Ebb & Flow

Saturday morning comes and Harper is deeply into her Intro to Surfing 101. The kids and adults sit, all eyes on the animated Harper talking about getting up on the board. Tina smiles observing how good Harper is with kids and so pleased about what is happening.

“Ok who wants to try?” Harper says standing on the board she just demonstrated standing up on. The kids are all feeling a little shy still and no one volunteers. “Oh come on, I’ll have to pick someone…” Still no hands. With a smile Harper has a bright idea, “Should we make one of the grown ups do it?”

    “Yeah!” All the kids say.

Harper looks at Shane and motions for her to join her. “Come on Shane.”

Shane shakes her head giving Harper pleading eyes.

“Come on.” Harper says egging Shane on, “Please.”

    Shane relents and joins Harper.

“You guys all know Shane?!” The kids nod. “Well, she’s going to show you how easy it is to do this.”

Harper instructs Shane on what to do, all the while smiling at how cute and awkward she is. On her first try at popping up Shane almost nails the move.

“See, told you it was easy.” She says looking at the kids. “Don’t move Shane, stay just like that.” She says placing her hand on the back of her crouching friend. “There is something a little off here, can anyone tell me what it is?”

Tina loves that Harper didn’t use the word ‘wrong’, instead saying ‘off’.

A shy girl named Jasmine raises her hand.

“What do you think Jasmine?” Harper says encouraging the girl with a smile.

“Her feet are too far back?” Jasmine says tentatively.

“Bingo!” Harper moves to the front of the board. “If Shane were in the water right now she would fall off.” Harper lifts the nose of the board a little throwing off Shane’s balance causing her to plop down into the sand. The kids chuckle and Shane gives Harper a look. “Her weight was too far back and the nose of her board would’ve gone up and out of the water.” Harper goes over to Shane and helps her up. “Jasmine why don’t you come up here and show Shane how it’s done.” Harper gives Jasmine a wink of encouragement.
