Millie stood there, watching Trixie with a heavy heart. The stubborn blond had no intention of accompanying her to the police station. Which Millie understood but it still hurt, Trix wasn’t the only one having to deal with a difficult situation.

Without another word Millie walked out, leaving her beating heart behind. She couldn’t believe how quickly everything could change, and how easily happiness could be disrupted. All it took was one thing, one minor incidental detail and the fate of the future was changed forever. Thoughts intruded on Millies befuddled mind as Max made an untimely reappearance. She didn’t know what to expect, what state Max would be in. The worst counteracted with the impossible to create images and assumptions which Millie did not even want to comprehend.

Fear gripped Millie with an iron fist as memories of Max flashed back through her mind. All the things she had done, the worst case scenarios which had always seemed to follow Millies messed-up sister around like a bad omen. The times Millie had picked her life less and incoherent body off the floor, taken the needles and razors blades out of reach. The fights and distant screams filled with anger and hate at an unfair world, seamlessly followed Millie into sleepless nights. Her only saving grace had been in the form of Trixie and now she had jeopardised that.

As she stepped into the jarring sunlight and into the safe confines of her car, time seemed a distant trouble. Worry filled her consciousness and over took all controllable senses, auto pilot resumed and Millies mind took on the dark confines which she was so used to hiding inside of, when the world became too ugly for her eyes to accept.

To hide the vulnerable emotion resident in Millies deep brown eyes, she covered them with her sunglasses. She glanced briefly towards the empty passenger seat which would still have remnants of Trixie’s smell impregnated into the leather surface. Ignoring the impending need to run back into the house and be comforted by the one person she could lose herself within, Millie drove away.

I remained cemented to the spot I was in, my gaze transfixed to the place MIllie had just vacated. A tear stung my eyes, I let it fall; run down my cheek and plummet to the floor. Taking in a deep breath I turned away and crumbled over the surface of the kitchen counter, my head in my hands, the emotions spilling over. Why did I have to be so stubborn, why couldn’t I see how hard this was for Millie? I let out a whimper of sorrow and designated myself to the cruel reality of the situation.
