Sant-il-Khadra (A Year of Good Fortune) – Chapter 1: La Alhát (The First Day)

Jenny rubbed her eyes sleepily and ran the back of her hand across her forehead, wiping away the faintest hint of sweat.  She was just about to walk back out to serve Alice when Kit stepped in front of her.  "Go home girl."  Jenny balanced the tray in her hand and shifted awkwardly.  "I have another hour on the clock and I need to serve Alice…"  Kit took the tray from her hands.  "Honey you look exhausted.  Go hame Jenny, get some rest.  You can pick up an extra shift later in the week if you still need the money.  Now scoot."  Kit walked towards Alice, tray in hand, leaving Jenny without time to protest.  Kit made her way over to her longtime friends and sat down handing the order over.  "Hitting the hard stuff I see."  Alice picked up her head and blinked sleepily.  "Hey Kit.  Long time no see."  Kit ran a hand through her friends hair eliciting a soft smile from the younger woman.  "What happened to Jenny?’   Leaning back in her chair Kit crossed her arms and stretched her legs out.  "Sent her home for the night.  Child needs rest."  Alice nodded.  "She looks like hell."  Kit sighed.  "She’s having a hard time right now.  Her grandmother’s sick."  Alice, never one to turn down information cocked an eyebrow in inquiry.  "Serious?"  Kit shrugged.  "I think maybe.  She’d been trying to get her step-father to talk to her about it but he claims they don’t want to see her.  She’s been beating herself up over it and that boy of hers wants her to give it up but… you know Jenny."  ALice nodded.  "Always one for lost causes."  The two women smiled and Kit patted Alice’s shoulder again.  "You don’t look so good either.  Talk to me girl."  Without any further provocation, and without being able to contain herself any longer, ALice divulged to Kit the details of her sordid affair over the past few months.  The older woman listened, nodding ever so slightly on occasion as the cafe began to empty for the night.
Jenny walked through the door of her house and threw her keys on the table carelessly.  She placed her back down and ran a hand over her warm forehead breathing in the muggy summer air.  As she walked to her room she began unbuttoning her work blouse.  Once inside the room she was greeted with the sight of an already sleeping Max wrapped in bed sheets.  Sighing and  gnashing her teeth a little she undressed, throwing her work clothes on the ground and grabbing a loose tank top from the floor.  Pulling the shirt over her head she made her way to the bathroom, past Shane’s closed door.  Jenny brushed her teeth and splashed handfuls of cold water on her face, trying to lessen the heat radiating from her skin.  SHe dried her face with a towel that hung loosely from the was rack and exited the bathroom, gingerly turning off the light as she went.  She had her hand on the knob of her door and was ready to turn in for the night when the phone rang.  Jenny paused for a moment before racing to pick up the receiver, hoping against hope that this would be the call she had been waiting for; the call beckoning her back home to she bedside of her ailing bubbe.  "Hello?"  There was a pause on the end of the other line, then a gruff man’s voice.  "Ma’am?"  Jenny paused.  "Yes, I’m here." "Ma’am, this is Officer Ben Nguyen of the greater Los Angeles police department.  Is this the residence of a Shane McCutcheon?"

    1. I feel for Bette…but if she has been gone for months…she probably shouldn’t step foot back in LA for awhile, and if she does give Angelica back she needs to get Kit to cross state lines and get her cause Tina just might do bodily harm…BUT THEN AGAIN it didn’t say that Tina put out an Amber alert so maybe there’s some hope for Bette to redeem herself but not with Henry around. Please continue.
