    Run (7) – Final Chapter

He locked eyes with me, and mine locked with his. Slowly, he was starting toward me, beckoning to me as if I would obey his wishes.

    “Come here, darling.”

    “Fuck off.”

He laughed, “Ooh, someone’s gotten a little feisty.”

I knew I could run, but for once in all of this mess, I didn’t want to. I wanted to confront my fear of him, however ridiculous it may have been under the circumstances. I found a sort of bravery in myself I hadn’t known was there. I wondered if it had been there all along, too bullied to surface.

For once in my relationship with him, I fought back. As he grabbed onto my shirt, I tried hitting his arms, and was finally able to wrestle free of his hold on my clothing. And to my complete and utter shock, I slapped him hard across the face. We were both totally amazed by what I had done for what must have been an entire minute, and for that time, the power had shifted. Now I was not only the helpless victim, but I had defended myself with force. I got tingles imagining the pride Bette would feel, and my own sense of accomplishment – that I could fight for my own survival.

He was so angry after I had hit him that he lunged after me to bring both of his hands around my neck. I was so afraid and surprised that I hadn’t noticed where he was pushing me. I didn’t even know I was near the edge of the pool until he pushed me back, I lost my balance, and fell in. The sensation of falling … it really knocked the wind out of me, which in return took me longer to re-surface and take a deep breath in. By the time I could breathe again, he had already jumped in with me. It only took moments for him to start pulling me in near the middle of the pool, where we could stand.

I tried to pull myself away, but my clothes were dragging through the water, and I lost so much buoyancy that it was hard to swim. When he finally pulled me back into his chest, he put one hand on my neck, and the other slipped around my stomach. I remember that we were facing the fence, so that not even the sight of Bette’s house could comfort my concerns of his strength. He could have really killed me, and I knew it, but I had to fight. It was a new part of me, and it wouldn’t be denied any longer. I deserved so much more than this.

    1. You have to stand up to abusive partners whether it’s physical or verbal abuse in order to reclaim your life. Excellent story. I can’t wait for another one from that fertile imagination of yours.

    2. At times I was so afraid for Tina and Angelicabut I’m extremely happy that she finally stood up to him. Most abusers are cowards and don’t know how to handle a woman that fights back, it throws them off their game. Angie was very brave to call the police, so proud of her for doing so. And Bette, well, she is just the greatest ever. It’s a good thing Bette was not there because she would have killed him and he well deserved it. I think though that Tina should have asked Angelica if she really wanted to visit with him after what she witnessed, I wouldn’t think she would want to see him except to spit on him. I never understood how he found them to begin with and when he caught her in the grocery store, it was obvious that he had been stalking them. It was a great story nevertheless. Thanks for bringing it to us.
