    Prodigal Chapter 13

Danny and Caroline had gotten up early.  It turned out, Angelica was an early riser.  5 am early.  By seven they were on their second pot of coffee, but figured it was pointless to try to get any more rest.  Danny had forgotten how hard it was to deal with an infant, how difficult it had been to get time alone with his wife.  He was glad that he could be there for Tina when he had not allowed her to be there for him.  This thought occurred to him as he was getting dressed and he walked out into the living room to tell his other sister who was busy entertaining a borderline fussy baby.

When Danny walked into the room, Caroline gave him a hard once over.  He looked good.  He wore khaki shorts and a white polo shirt with brown thong sandals and a belt that matched.  He was slender and tall, but with broad shoulders, not barrel-chested but manly.  At thirty-six he had managed to avoid a beer belly or a spare tire.  The only possible flaw Carrie saw was his thinning hair.  You look good, she commented, before Danny could say anything.

He smiled and struck a pose for her, his hands on his hips and chest puffed out.

Did Annie pack for you? she asked cynically.

Of course, he said like that was the dumbest question he had ever heard.  And were going to have to go shopping.  I will not have us looking shabby next to Bette and Tina.

They do have style, dont they? Carrie smiled.

Wait til they have another kid.  Style will go right out the window.  Danny crossed the room and took Angelica from his sister.  Morning, baby girl.  He bounced her in his arms gently and her slight fussiness subsided.  Caroline looked impressed.  Fatherhood taught me a couple things.  I can change a mean diaper too.

Carrie opened her mouth to say something in return, but the phone rang cutting her off.  She had forgotten.  It was Thursday.  That meant that phone call was from her mother.  Her mother dutifully called her every Thursday.  And every Thursday since she had left on this tour that seemed to get longer every damned week, her mother had called her in whatever hotel room she occupied.  Why would LA be any different?
