Dana briefly stopped before pushing the door to the bathroom. She wondered if Alice really needed to pee, or if it was an excuse to ‘talk’ about what had happened between them. Alice was standing over a sink, hands either side, staring at her reflection in the mirror. She hadn’t planned what to say to Dana, even though she hadn’t slept a wink in the six or so hours since. There was no time for planning now. Dana half entered the bathroom and glanced at her friend before venturing inside fully. She saw Alice transfixed on the mirror and slowly walked up behind her, wondering how close she could get before being repremanded. Very close, was the answer. Alice looked at Dana via the mirror, she could feel Dana’s breath on the back of her neck. Alice shivered involuntarily but said nothing. Dana noticed Alices shiver but also remained silent. She didn’t want to interrupt the electricity she was feeling, and neither did Alice.
“We should talk.” Alice verbalised and broke eye contact with Dana in the mirror. Dana nodded to herself and took a step to the side and joined Alice in leaning against the sinks.
Alice turned to the side to face Dana and looked at the floor.
“About what happened..” Alice waved a hand dismissively. She paused. “It was a mistake.. right?” Her eyes shot up and looked at Dana’s for some kind of indicative response. Nothing.
“I guess. I mean.. if you say so.” Dana replied almost coldly. She didn’t want her voice to sound emotionless but she hadn’t exactly planned what to say, even though she too hadn’t received any sleep. Dana cocked her head to the side and bit on her bottom lip, searching Alices eyes for clues as to what she was thinking. Nothing.
“So if I was to kiss you again?..” Alice boldly announced. ‘*****,’ she thought, ‘too bold! nice one, Al.’ Her eyes fell to the floor again shyly and she bit her lip. She looked back up at Dana.
Danas eyes widened. Did she just hear her best friend utter something about another kiss? No, that couldn’t be right.
“I’m sorry, what?” Dana enquired, mouth ajar again at Alices blunt statement.
“Uh.. nothing, Dane, don’t worry about it.” Alice dismissed Dana. ‘*****’ she mused.
“No, Al..” Dana placed a hand gently on Alices shoulder, causing Alice to look at Dana sharply. She looked at Dana, then Dana’s hand, ultimately back at Dana again.
They continued looking at each other, no words swapped, no words needed. Their eyes spoke volumes. Dana’s dark eyes were now fixed on Alices mouth. She wanted so badly for her lips to graze Alices again. Alice noticed Dana’s obsession with her mouth, and decided to place her hands behind her back, resisting temptation to grab Dana and kiss her. It didn’t work for long. Before she knew it Dana had leant in toward her and tentatively placed her lips upon Alices, searching for some kind of silent allowance to continue. Alice released her hands from behind her and firmly took a hold of Dana by her biceps and, whilst still locked in the kiss, walked Dana quickly but assertively toward the wall of the Planet’s bathroom.
Their kiss was cautious at first, each allowing the other to break it off at any point. Neither did, of course. Passion coursed through their veins like adrenaline, the rush was intense and filled their heads and hearts relentlessly. They bumped up against the wall, liplock continuing, tongues exploring for the second time in under 10 hours. Alice moaned quietly, causing Dana to deepen the kiss, knowing it was something they both wanted oh-so-badly. Alice slid her hand from Dana’s toned, tanned bicep up across her shoulder, up her neck and into her hair a little. She knew it would ruin Dana’s near perfect hair but she didn’t care. In that moment they were the only two in the world. Dana responded eagerly, letting her fingertips slip under the hem of Alices shirt, causing Alice to moan a little louder this time. Alice broke of their kiss leaving them both fairly out of breath. She leaned her forehead against Dana’s and took a minute to regain composure. Dana’s eyes were still closed as she lightly panted, she didn’t want this feeling of unified connection to be broken. Alas, it was so.
“My God, Dana..” Alice spoke quietly.
Dana opened her eyes and looked awkwardly at her friend, who she’d just made out with.
“We need to go back to the table, or.. or things could get a little crazy” Alice waved her hand sporadically and laughed nervously.
Dana nodded quickly, repeatedly. She was still reeling from the intensity of the kiss they’d just shared.
“Yeah.. yeah. Tonya.. will be.. wondering where I am.” Dana stuttered to get the words out.
Alice just looked at Dana. She didn’t know what to say. For once, words failed her. She just turned, and made her way out of the bathroom, straightening her shirt as best as possible.
———-
Back at the table, Tonya was still flipping through her magazine, Tina was now joined by Bette and together with Shane they were making plans to go out later that evening. Shane spotted a slightly flustered Alice emerging from the bathroom and grinned again. Tina caught the grin and looked quizically at Shane, and glanced over to the direction Shane was looking, seeing Alice. Tina quickly looked back at Shane, who wiggled her eyebrows. Tina looked shocked for a second, but her look quickly broke into a wicked grin. She winked at Shane. No words were needed. Bette was absently checking her cell, and missed the interaction between her wife and Shane.
“Hey, hi.” Alice mumbled as she resumed her seat, noticing that due to Bette’s arrival, her seat had been pushed closer to Dana’s.
“Hi Alice” returned Bette, not looking away from her cell.
Dana emerged seconds later looking more flustered than Alice. Apparant not only by her flush cheeks but also by random curls of hair out of place. Shane grinned even more. Tina followed suit.
“Welcome back you guys.” Shane rasped.
Dana looked at Shane suspiciously, mouth pursed into an ‘o’ shape.
“Ok, Shane, what’s going on?”
“You tell me.” came Shane’s reply. She smiled wickedly, picked up her cell and stood up. “I gotta go anyway, I’ll see you all later ok?”
The group nodded and said their respective goodbyes. Dana was confused by Shanes reply and looked to her right at Alice. Dana then noticed when she sat the closer gap between her and Alice and looked down at the gap between their chairs. She looked up again. Tonya roused.
“Where’s my kiss babykins?” Tonya pouted.
Dana hesitated. She slid her hand under the table and placed it on Alice’s left thigh. Alice’s eyes widened, but she did not say anything. Words weren’t needed. Dana then proceeded to sigh audibly and gave Tonya a peck on the lips.
“We should be going baby, we have a lot to plan!” Tonya squealed excitedly. Dana rolled her eyes.
“Ok. Yeah, we do.” came Dana’s dejected response. Dana slid her hand further up Alice’s thigh, gave it a gentle squeeze then let go. She stood up and waited for Tonya to gather her beloved posessions.
“Ok honey let’s go!”
Dana winced.
“Bye guys.” Dana simply stated and walked toward the exit, Tonya shuffling quickly behind her to catch her up.
Tina and Bette said nothing immediately, then Tina projected her opinion.
“Alice, you have to tell her.”
“Tell her? Who? Don’t know what you’re talking about.” Alice’s eyes darted nervously about the room. Alice sighed. “*****. I do.” was her next response. She gathered her keys and phone and hurriedly departed, leaving a proud Tina and an uninterested Bette behind.
Alice halted abruptly outside the door of The Planet, head swivelling either way to see which way they went. She spotted Dana.
“DANA!” Alice shouted, and watched as Dana turned round to see where Alice was shouting from.
“Um, you go ahead Ton. I’ll catch you up, ok?”
“Ok baby!” Tonya replied, causing Dana to wince again.
Dana walked back nonchalantly, or at least she hoped she would appear nonchalant. She didn’t. Alice walked a couple of steps to meet Dana. They met just outside The Planet, outside the main window. Tina smiled when she saw the pair there.
“Dana.. I..” Alice found it hard to find the words.
“What, Al?” Dana shook her head unknowingly.
“I.. It wasn’t a mistake.” Alice exhaled at the end of her confession. She looked up at Dana, her friend who had meant so much more to her recently, and searched her eyes for signs. Nothing.
