My Skin is Painfully New – Chapter 14

Tina, whats with the lunch set-up? she asked.

What are you talking about? replied Tina rising with a measure of difficulty from behind her desk. Her adjustable chair had been lowered so that her belly now fit under the desk allowing her to pull herself closer to the computer and phone. This proved to be a great solution while she was sitting, but not so great when she needed to stand.

Helenas just arrived with a caterer. She said something about treating everyone to lunch. You didnt know about it?

Noooo, said Tina. Not that Im the least bit surprised.

Come on then, lets go look! Amelia said grabbing Tinas arm and dragging her to the door.

Amelia, I need to stay here, okay? Tina said in a voice that left no room for negotiation.

Whatever. Your loss–it smells delicious! Amelia said while making her way with the rest of the Center staff to the conference room.

Bette, call for you on line 1, James said in a stage whisper, peeking his head into Bettes office.

Who is it? Bette demanded as she placed her hand over the speaker of the phone.

    Mrs. Peabody, he replied.

James, I think Ive made it extremely clear that from now on Franklin takes calls from that *****, not me, she said glaring at him indignantly and turning back towards her phone.

No Bette, not Helena. Peggy Peabody for you, James quickly explained.

Bette looked perplexed for a moment. Ill take it.

Helena breezed into Tinas office with a flourish, filling the small space with her presence like helium fills a balloon; her arm extended, offering a colorful bunch of cut flowers in a small vase in Tinas direction.

Here Christina, she said, the caterer brought these, but there was no room for them on the table once he put down all of the food. I thought they might brighten up your office.

Thanks, Tina said, smiling briefly and putting the flowers on her desk.

Why did you do that? asked Tina, nodding in the direction of the conference room.

No particular reason, darling, just wanted to treat these poor, hard-working, wonderful staff members to a spectacular lunch, Helena replied. Surely you dont mind?

Tina turned her face away at Helenas use of the term of endearment, choosing to ignore it rather than give it the weight of acknowledgement.

Helena pulled out the documents, a rather impressive stack, and began talking through each one quickly and efficiently. Tina was listening, but was disturbed at how distracted she was becoming with Helenas body so close to hers. Helena leaned across Tina to pick up a line-item reporting form that was just slightly out of Tinas reach. Helenas long hair brushed past Tinas face, the scent of lily-of-the-valley swinging along with it as Helenas breast grazed past the blondes arm. Tina emitted a small gasp and pulled back.

Are you alright, inquired Helena softly, leaning closer to Tinas face and touching her arm.

Yes, yes, Im fine. The baby just kicked me pretty hard, Tina said softly.

Ive missed her, Helena whispered, putting her hand on the belly, now not hidden by the desk.

    Tina swallowed hard. Helena, dont.

Ive missed you too, said the beautiful brunette as she leaned even closer and gently covered Tinas mouth with her own.

    2. Hopefully when the baby kicked Tina, letting Tina know the wrong person was getting to close for comfort. Get rid of Helena, give us a bit of loving between Bette and Tina, look forward to your next chapter, post it real soon.

    3. Arrgh! cliffhangers be blasted! Helena needs to fall into a deep hole and disappear. Yes indeed. It can be done. I love Bette’s frustration, I think it is just desserts, and she doesn’t have any alternatives but to be patient.

    4. God damn these cliffhangers of yours. This bloody Helena is killing me here….she can be glad that I don´t meet her in person.

    6. arg. she just couldn’t leave well enough alone, could she. when will helena learn to butt out of people’s lives. when will you stop bringing her around to mess up the hopeful b&t reunion? ;-)

    7. I hope Bette just suddenly appear, and knock some senses in Helena. Then go home and have angry sex with Tina. (SMILING) I love me some angry sex scene, I think that’s where all the passion, desire, and pain, are in its rawness. I love it!
(Many, oh so many times, I had contemplated, even if the door are wide opened, I’m so afraid to step out. Sometime it’s better to stay in, to pretend. It keeps everyone happier. I think I’m a very good pretender too.)

    8. AWESOME! MORE, MORE, MORE, MORE, MORE, MORE, MORE, MORE, MORE, MORE, MORE, MORE, MORE, MORE, MORE, MORE, MORE, MORE, MORE, MORE, MORE, MORE, MORE, MORE, MORE, MORE, MORE.

    9. Excellent chapter, 24. (May I call you that?)Your skill and confidence as a storyteller seems to grow with each chaper. Also, I enjoyed the way you brought in Marie Brandt! IMO, Helena’s had enough and it’s time for Bette to get some.
