    THIS STORY IS INFLUENCED BY SEASON 2 SPOILERS (although less so now than at the start of the story). Tina collapses from an unknown ailment. Bette refuses to leave her side.

    Dr. Gomba approached the group of women, now including Helena. Mrs. Kennard has given me permission to discuss her daughters condition with you, she explained.

    Tina is suffering from heat apoplexy, or heat hyper-pyrexia, caused by thermoregulatory failure, she began.

    Excuse me doc, English would be helpful right about now, said Alice.

    Yes, sorry. Tinas body has seriously overheated. Think of a car engine that overheats. Once the radiator runs out of water, what happens? she asked looking at the women.

    The engine seizes up, replied Shane.

    Exactly, agreed Dr. Gomba, running a hand through her long brunette mane.

    Hey not all of us dykes get car metaphors, interjected Alice making quotation marks with her two hands.

    Tina ran out of fluids–probably a combination of exertion, the heat, her pregnancy, and perhaps a recent bout of diarrhea. Her temperature was almost 105 degrees, but weve brought it under control, the doctor continued.

    I thought her body felt hot this morning before we got out of bed, said Helena.

    Did she exercise this morning, Dr. Gomba questioned Helena.

    We made love for quite a while. Tina didnt seem ill. In fact she had an enormous amount of energy, Helena said unabashedly as Bette bit her lip and looked away and Alice rolled her eyes, and then she started running around packing. We were to leave on a short holiday today.

    Hmm. I see, said the doctor, well we are tanking her up on fluids via an intravenous line and weve also administered anti-seizure medication.

    Did she have a seizure? asked Bette, alarmed.

    No, it is just preventative. Tina was on the verge of suffering a more serious condition, known as heat stroke. That would have involved serious damage to her kidneys, her heart, and almost certainly to her baby, the doctor said while surveying the group of women and trying to connect the dots between them.

    Is the baby okay? questioned Shane quietly.

    As far as we can tell, yes. Although we will have to do more testing over the next few days. The important thing right now is to replenish her body with fluids and regain some balance of her electrolytes.

    The women nodded and Bette exhaled a long breath she didnt even realize she had been holding.

    She is asking for someone to come in right now. Which one of you is her partner? asked the doctor.

    That would be me, said Helena, brushing past Bette dismissively.

    Come with me Bette, Tina has been asking for you for the last hour, Dr. Gomba said taking Helena’s arm.

    6. So, the doctor grabbed Helena’s arm thinking she’s Bette!! Hopefully, Helena will do the right thing and get Bette in the room with Tina! Great chapter…post soon!!!!!!!

    9. At the edge of her consciousness there was a nagging detail left dangling, like a sock left on the clothesline after laundry day. Something she had to finish. “Helena,” she whispered.

      That’s right! Helena is just one piece of dirty laundry left to get rid of. GO tina GO!
