Manipulate This
Story written on December 16, 2012 by Pootie Chasin' Dog.
Tina took purposeful strides headed to the bar as she entered the Planet. Seemingly out of nowhere, Bette appeared.
"Hey," Bette said.
"Hey," Tina said, startled at Bette’s sudden appearance. She shifted awkwardly, not knowing what to say next.
They had kissed. Neither one knew what to make of it. But she wasn’t the one in a relationship. She had to protect her own heart.
"Hi," Bette said, inviting explanation from Tina, not knowing how to initiate conversation herself.
"I…I was just having a quick drink" Tina said. "I had a brutal day at work."
"You’ve been avoiding me," the somber look on Bette’s face made her look defeated.
"No I haven’t," Tina replied.
Bette shifted and maintained eye contact while Tina looked away.
"Okay yeah, maybe I have," Tina admitted. "I’m sorry."
"I just think we should talk about it…that’s all," Bette said.
"Okay, yeah you’re right, let’s talk," Tina said. "Do you want to have a drink?"
Bette nodded.
The room bustled about them as they sat with their newly acquired drinks in one of the few quiet corners of the club.
They sat beside each other, so they could have a private conversation.
"I just wanted to say I’m sorry," Bette said. "For what happened."
"No, don’t be sorry," Tina replied. "You and Jodi are together. Let’s not get all freaked out and weird and manipulative…"
"Am I being manipulative…is that what…"
"No, Bette, don’t be offended by what I don’t mean," Tina said. "We always fall into this pattern."
Bette leaned in to ensure only Tina could hear her, even above the din.
"I loved kissing you the other night," she said. "I didn’t want to stop at kissing you."
Tina brought her head back to make eye contact again.
"You only want what you can’t have," Tina stated. "You see me moving on and decide that doesn’t fit in with your idea of what should happen. Even though you’re with Jodi."
"What I had with Jodi doesn’t compare with what I had with you," Bette replied.
"This is so not the conversation I expected to have," Tina shifted away from Bette, sensing that she had been making her way closer as they spoke.
