Lucky in Love (Chapter 24)

Falling asleep wasn’t the problem. Staying asleep was. Three days after Alice’s brush with death, Dana was exhausted. She didn’t want to miss a minute with Al when she was awake and was compelled to watch over her while she slept. Although she didn’t understand why, Dana also felt the need to protect her wife from their well-meaning friends. It took tremendous willpower but so far she’d managed to stifle her instinct to limit their visits. She was completely unprepared when Alice told her, in no uncertain terms, that not only was she to go home, she was also to go to work the next day.
“I’m not leaving here until you do,” Dana answered. “You should know how I feel better than anyone.”
“I do,” Alice wrote. “But this is different and you know it.”
“How is this different Alice?”
“I’m out of danger. You weren’t.”
“But you’re still in pain, your dreams…”
“I’m getting better!” Al managed to interrupt via her screen. “You don’t sleep here. You look like shit.”
“Thanks Al,” Dana smiled, knowing that Alice was genuinely worried about her.
“Seriously, you need your beauty sleep,” Al scribbled furiously. “You’re going to work tomorrow. ESPN won’t wait forever.”
“You’re pretty bossy for someone who doesn’t talk,” Dana teased.
“Fuck you too,” Alice shot back. “You know you love me.”
“Baby,” Dana took her hand and moved close. “You are my life. I can’t live without you.”
“I love you. More every day,” Alice wrote. “Please, Dane, let Shane take you home now.”
Dana knew she’d already lost the battle. Shane was sprawled on the sofa, trying to pretend that she wasn’t witness to this exchange. Obviously Alice hadn’t told her that Dana didn’t know about the plan when she emailed her.
“Okay, but I’m not leaving you here alone,” Dana drew her line in the sand.
“Shane…tell her,” Al requested.
“Someone will be here until you get back tomorrow night,” Shane said quickly. “Kit’s on her way right now, and I think Jen said something about coming too. Bette and Tina are after that and I’m spending the night.”
“But…”
“No buts,” Alice took Dana’s face in her hands. “Please, for me?”
Helena gripped Lara’s hand tightly and listened as her mother and their attorney explained Winnie’s situation. She couldn’t take her eyes off the legal documents on the table in front of her.

ok winnie really needs to be in jail, this is crazy! glad alice is on the road to recovery and shane is taking such good care of her. keep up the great writing!

Yay! happy jig. After my declaration of crushing on the Pegster I feel sort of bare – just to clarify – it’s not like I want to get down with the lady but her voice is so smooth – I think I’d like her to read to me – wait now I’ve said way to much. Your story still fab and I love it so.
