    Lover’s Lapse – Chapter 18

“I’m sorry Tina, I didn’t mean to scare you,” Alice said as she lifted Liza from Tina’s arms.  “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

“It was just I was startled when you touched my shoulder.  It was nothing,” Tina replied.

As she stood and turned to Alice she realized that she had been crying as she slept and  quickly wiped away the tears.  “Is Bette here?” she asked softly.  As she waited for Alice to reply she was trying to still the rapid beating of her heart.  If Bette were to come to the hospital could Tina assume that meant that she really wanted them to start a new life as a family?  What if she had chosen to wait at Tina’s house?  Would that mean that she was really ready to try to begin to talk about our problems without any distractions?

Tina was trying to process each scenario in her mind and the only thing that she knew for certain was that she needed to calm down and accept things as they came.

    “She’s downstairs waiting,” replied Alice.

    “Waiting for what?” asked Tina

“For me to let her know whether or not Sheri is here,” Alice said as she walked over and placed Liza in her crib.

“She will not be here this morning,” Tina said quietly.

“How can you be so sure?” Alice asked with a puzzled look on her face.

“Because I told her that I have to try to make this work with Bette.  I told her that the harder I tried to not love Bette the more I realized that I could never stop,” Tina replied in a voice barely above a whisper.

“Hot damn we’re in business here Liza,” Alice said cheerfully.  “We all know how much your mothers love each other and now maybe they will realize it too!”

“Look Alice not a word about this to Bette – I mean it!” She is not to know anything about Sheri right now,” Tina replied looking intently at Alice.

“Fine, whatever!  Are you just going to make Bette suffer and work really hard to get you back?” Alice asked in jest.

“That’s not it,” said Tina.  “I just don’t want her to think that because Sheri is out of the picture that she can assume that means that we can forget everything that has happened between us and pick up from where we left off.  We can’t continue to take each other for granted.”
