    Love & Pride – chapter 72

    LOVE AND PRIDE Chapter 72

Bette pulled the black shirt over her head and glanced at herself in the mirror. Knowing that she was right on time she picked up her bag and left her bedroom. Downstairs Tina was sipping a cup of coffee while reading one of the Sundays that she had neglected yesterday. Bette walked into the kitchen and they glanced at each other

    “Where is she? “

“Gone upstairs to do her hair again “

“What is she wearing?” Bette asked putting her bag down and sitting facing Tina.

“Dark grey suit and white shirt – she looks very respectable “

“What time does she have to be there? “

“9 – But they have no idea what time the case will be called. She’s been on the phone to the college secretary who was not amused. I expect she will be getting an invitation to speak to the Dean or the Bursar “

“What about Bonnie and Clyde? “

    “Meeting her there “

Bette took an orange from a bowl of fruit and started peeling it

“Not the best way to start term is it? “

“No – I thought Peggy was very calm and sweet last night “

Bette smiled “Yes she was and that was not what Helena was expecting. My concerns are that the drugs thing will come out somehow or other – I think that would really put the fox in the hen house “

“Lets just hope that nothing is said “

    “How likely is that?”

“Well – it was just a caution. I don’t know enough about that part of the court process yet “

“Pity – I cannot imagine how cross Peggy will be if she finds out when Helena is in court “

“She will have me stuffed “Helena said coming into the room – she looked very smart but anxious – she had barely slept the night before. Somehow Peggy’s kindness and motherly concern made Helena feel 70 times more guilty than she would have if Peggy had come in shouting and yelling at her.

    “Hi –how you feeling? “

    “Worried “

    1. Bette was right to stand up to Peggy Helena is an adult and should be treated like one. Being a Peabody Peggy wants to hold Helena to a higher standard, but she is human and we all make mistakes. Granted some mistakes are a lot worse than others but Hel is owning up to what she did and accepting the punishment and that’s got to count for something. Can the woman have some peace for a while?

    2. There are few things that make you feel as bad as letting someone down who means a lot to you. Peggy needs to realise that, and maybe also realise that she’s letting Helena down by being so unforgiving. Glad Bette stood up for Hels. Will she be able to help Alice too, or let her sink or swim on her own? Very good chap, ally. Thanks

    3. At some point Alice must realize that she is being terribly self-destructive. Peggy rally needs to lighten up with Helena after all she is an adult and is learning her lesson albeit a little late. Peggy should give her a little latitude here and allow her to make amends as the Court suggests and for her to have learned a very hard lesson and change her major to something she truly enjoys and then she will be very successful. PPS

    5. To sweet to be true, Peggy was to sweet with Helena and now even Bette and Tina will get a talk! But Peggy needs to understand Helena and Helena deserve a punishment in order to think twice what she will do. Hope you are feeling better! thanks for the post

    6. Too bad Peggy has so little prior experience as a mother. There does come a time when you need to stop or what you are trying to do becomes counterproductive. What’s with Alice? The real problem with trailer trash is that they attract tornados. You don’t seem to get those in Britain so often, so do chavs bring other forms of bad weather there?

    7. I really like how Bette stood up to Peggy about why the drugs thing was never mentioned. Some blood-related siblings would have no problems tattling on each other. It’s also bad enough to feel like you’re being compared to someone you know is better than you at one thing or another, but to constantly be told, and by your own parent! Well it just blows my mind. Alice needs to get off her ass.

    8. WOW!!! So glad Bette got right back in Peggy’s face. Peggy needs to back off and give Helena room to grow up. People make mistakes and learn from them I just hope Helena does. Thanks Ally

    9. Hello Ally, Another fabulous chapter from you, I loved the build up as Bette and Tina talked things through. They truly love Helena and want whats best for her. Sometimes loving someone is having the courage of letting them make mistakes and grow from them. This is exactly the complex emotional journey that life is. You alway keep it real. Alice really is struggling with college work but too embarrassed to admit it so I hope that Bette can get her to knuckle down and get the job done. She has the ability just not the motivation. I liked that Tina and Dana tried to sort this out but so far it has fallen on deaf ears. Now the punishments doled out on the gals were to be expected. Sad that this case revealled Helena’s first brush with the law to Peggy. I was really happy to see Bette defend her sister to Peggy. I do think that they did the best that they could in untenable conditions. Nothing would have been gained from Peggy’s involvement at that time. Pity is tha Helena is the one really suffering here as she is beating herself up about disappointing them all. Now I can’t wait to see where this leads to. Helena needs to follow her heart and find her path in life. Maybe she will meet someone during her community service. Ally, as always your wonderful words put me through the spectrum of human emotions. From joy to despair, from humor to seriousness and form love to hate. Thank you as ever for continuing this must read story. Your Loyal Fan.
