    Love in the Deep South

     

    The sun shined brightly through the holes between the old oak trees and the Spanish moss.  A blue saab wove its way down a two lane country highway. A large moving van followed the convertible down the sleepy road. Bette looked in the review mirror at the sleeping child. She turned the radio on and country music emerged softly. She laughed to herself and shook her head. She could hardly believe she had taken a position as Dean of the famed Savannah College of Art and Design, but after everything she needed the change. She needed to get out of New York.

     

    In the seat next to her a phone lit up and began to vibrate.

     

    Hello

     

    May I speak with Ms. Porter please? 

     

    Speaking.

     

    Hi this is Caleb Stokes, from Sand Dunes Realty.

     

    Yes.

     

    When would you like to pick up the keys to your new home?

     

    Well I’m about 4 miles from the house I think. Is there anyway you can meet me there?

    I was going to suggest that so I could show you around and answer any questions you might have.

     

    That would be great I will see you in a bit then.

     

    Great.

     

    Bette placed the phone back in the seat next to her and checked the mirror again. Her mind filled with images of the world wind of time that had passed since she had left LA for New York and now Georgia. A move she would have never guessed she’d make.

     

    She turned the dark onto an old narrow brick driveway. Two minutes later she pulled up in front of an old plantation house. It was white with black shutters. The roof made of wood. It looked very old and distinguished, but she could tell it had been taken care of.

     

    She opened the door and hot humid sticky air flooded in making her gasp. She stood and admired her new home in all its glory.

     

    A tall muscular, dark haired man approached her.

     

    Would you like us to start unloading?

     

    I don’t have the keys yet so you can take a break until the realtor gets here.

    1. Hmm. I’m interested in Bette’s backstory. Is she gay? Was she married? Does she have an ex that is still lingering? I hope not.. and even worse is the dead partner. Hope we meet Tina soon. Or, you know, hoping Tina is in this story. I totally find Page adorable. Love little kids. PPS.

    6. Very interesting. Loved the “cut on the lights”, because that is exactly how we southerns say it. It is either cut on everything or fixing to do something. Like fixing to go to the store.

    8. love these different beginnings. i lived in savannah for many years and this will be a good story. throw a little river street in there and trompin’ thru old cemetaries and the feel of savannah will hit us all. i am sure bette will make her mark on savannah like sherman did. great story. thanks for taking the time to share with us.
