Helena had actually had a productive day in the law section of the main Boston public library. Left alone with no distractions she had found it easy to start work on the books she had brought home from England. Concepts that made no sense to her after only a few hours sleep and a hangover became clear.
She worked until 4pm and walked the three blocks to Peabody Enterprises – the business that she would inherit one day. Helena wasn’t sure if she was capable of running an organisation so huge – with such a diverse portfolio.
Maybe it would never become an issue because Peggy showed no signs of cutting back her business empire – in fact she was talking about expansion – moving into new markets and new areas. There would always be a job for Helena somewhere in the great world that Peggy had inherited from her husband and expanded with such success.
Helena remembered very little about her father – he was tall and handsome and very remote. He had spoilt her as a way of compensating for how rarely he played with her. If she thought about it Melvin had taken more interest in her than her father. Their relationship had been fractious at first but over time things had improved with Bette and Peggy smoothing over any misunderstandings that happened.
Peggy was closer to Bette than Helena ever would be to Melvin but the relationship that had once threatened to split up the family was improving.
When Helena reached her mother’s office Peggy was putting papers into an expensive briefcase.
“Afternoon mother “
“Helena – my – you do look every inch the model student “
“I wouldn’t go that far “
“Have you had a successful day?”
“Yes – I have studied and made progress”
“Glad to hear it “
“Are you off to a meeting?”
“No – I’m going to work from home “
“Bad day?”
“Too many distractions “
“Careful mother -it’s looking like a family trait “
In twenty minutes they were heading through the city heading for the motorway.

Let’s hope Bette finds her balance between being caring and being Alpha without it being overwhelming. Great chapter.
Ally, the biggest pleasure of this chapter was the total acceptance of Tina by Peggy. After being rejected by her blood family, the arms of Bette’s are just what she needed. Helena and Peggy were doing so well until the review of Helena’s scholastic achievements was raised. Helena knows what she didn’t do and doesn’t need her nose rubbed in it but Peggy loves her daughter so can’t help herself from interfering. Honest representation of family life. Tina was wonderful for letting Bette deal with Helena on her own. This is genuinely a wonderful tale of love and romance. No journey worthwhile has no danger but be sticking together these gals can surmount Everest. Thank you for the beacon of light. Your Loyal Fan.
Bette definitely needs find a balance somewhere. She can’t always play the hero.
Must be nice having a stepmother/in-law like Peggy, but I guess she seems sort of harsh on Helena. I guess she just knows Hels can do better, all around. Hopefully Bette can help the two of them see eye-to-eye, without feeling too caught in the middle. Thanks, ally.
i like so much how B&T are handle this, Tina let Bette spoil her and is so good because with all the bad things that she have been living is time to live in a happy way

Unfortunately, Bette, yes. I get the feeling, though, if she ever needed support that Helena and Tina would be right there for her. (I feel the tension between B&T in s4, too, and BP stoned was PRICELESS. Is it just me, or does JB get more and more beautiful as the seasons pass?!)

Yeah, Bette will have to be alpha, but it is as much in her own makeup as it is in what she encounters. Why shouldn’t she be strong an know her own mind? I found it amusing that anyone was surprised that Bette would smoke a joint, she’s is in the right age range and has long been in the right circles for that sort of thing. And I just want to state for the record, that was NOT a classic shotgun she and Jodi shared. Goodness, have I said too much? Ally, won’t you send Peggy to save my sorry ass?
I am with you funnyone that was not a shot gun — but if iwasthat close toBP i would take anything. at least she is not shagging strange girls with amnesia when it comes to their skirts
I agreed with Peggy confronting Helena on her grades and health conserns, but she shouldn’t have let it end in slience. She should have told Helena that she was asking out of Love and concern for her. Peggy had a very valid point. I hope that Bette is able to calm her down and maybe broach the topic with Peggy. I TOTALLY agree with you Ally, Jenny needs to be SLAPPED quick and in a hurry. First for getting in Tina’s face for wanting to play BB withthem, and for writting that article about them. I don’t think that it is out of character for Bette to smoke pot, but it was in that setting. I don’t think that Bette would get high at a professional event where she may come in contact with prepective donors for the college. I also think that it is out of character for her to sleep with her TA when she could have easily found any woman in WeHo to releave a little tension. I am with you Ally in hoping and seeing a path of B&T to reunite.

Another great post ally! And no, Bette, life will not always demand you to be so alpha, but the fact that you exude confidence may put you in that role more often that you would like. You will have to set the boundaries of when you are not comfortable being the “rock” of everyone’s existence. Let’s just hope you are ‘alpha’ enough to set those boundaries. LOL! I have to say ditto on cpq’s comment regarding Bette getting high at a professional event, and sleeping with her TA. Bette takes her career very seriously and both of those things could land her in the unemployment line. Ally I liked your Author’s note about Jenny getting slapped. Now that would be something to see! JB definitely has some hot smiles…but yeah that one was exquisite! :) Can’t wait for your next post Ally!!!
Peggy is great and is so accepting of Tina and her relationship w/ Bette but maybe she could ease up pn her own daughter a little a bit. Helena has got to feel like a stranger in he r own home now they Peggy is treating her like she can do nothing right. I surely hope that Bette can comfort Helena and get her mentally to a place where Peggy’s comments don’t bring her down so much.

Awww that was such a sweet chapter. The way Peggy had accepted Tina like one of her own duaghters… it’s great. Poor Helena… maybe from now on she really should make an effort to do well .. Pls post soon Ally…
