Chapter 76:

It has been 2 weeks since Bette hurt her ankle.  After taking x-rays the doctors told her that she suffered what is known as a Grade III ankle sprain which means there was tearing of ligaments but no broken bones.  The treatment time would be at least 2 months but could take longer.  

Bette would miss the whole regular season.  If the Liberty made it to the play offs without her, she may be able to play in the off season to help the team advance.

Tina has called everyday to try to comfort her girl through this difficult time.  She could tell that Bette is worried about being out the whole season.  

“Bette you’re going to be fine.  You’ll play again and you’ll be great.”

“Tina this sprain is worse than the last one.  What if it doesn’t heal right?”  Bette said sounding more worried than Tina has ever heard the brunette be before.

“Bette, I don’t know exactly how it feels to be hurt but I know that you love playing more than anyone I know.  You have to use that love to get you through this.  And of course I will be here for you anytime you need me.”

“T, I have a one year contract.  What if I don’t get picked up by any team next year?”

“Baby of course you will get picked up.  You were the highest scorer for the Liberty in the games you played.”

“T, I know you are trying to make me feel better but you don’t know that.  I am a twice injured athlete with the potential to be great but because I have only had 4 pro games, I am unproven.”

“Bette what about your games with Team USA.  I mean you always did well in those games. Right?”

“Yeah I did ok Tina, but those games don’t count unless you are actually playing for a gold medal.”

“Babe you’re just scared.  You will rehabilitate and you’ll be back.  Just give yourself the time to do that.”

“I have to go Tina.  I’ll talk to you later.”

Tina is taken aback that Bette called her Tina and that she sounds so sad and dejected.

‘Please don’t pull away from me babe.’ She thought silently.
