    The “Holidays” continues the story of the refined and rebellious Dr. Sydney Livingston•passionate about her causes, love and life. In this segment, the serious Syd deals with the dual loss of her career and her mysterious long-time partner. It is a time of uncertainty as Syd pursues uncharted romance waters, and a time to discover a fresh identity in the world of her new L-Word friends

     

    Tasha smiles at the lameness of Syd’s humor.

     

    TASHA:  Give it up Syd, humor isn’t your strong point.  (becoming serious again) I just find myself so resentful of them all.  Even though I know it’s more my attitude then their’s.

     

    SYDNEY: Let’s face it; heterosexuals have a lock on Hallmark cards, Lifetime movies and family holidays.

     

    TASHA: Maybe that’s why we create our own family of friends.  (Tasha hesitates for a moment)  Speaking of which, are you going over to Bette’s later tonight?

     

    SYDNEY: Yeah, I’ll stop in for a few minutes on my way home.  How about you?

     

    TASHA:  No, I’m going to skip it this year.  I mean, I’m OK with everything, but I just don’t think I can deal with Alice and her new squeeze, not just yet.  When I leave here I’m headed home to curl up with one of those sappy old holiday movies.

     

    SYDNEY: What happened to that girl who asked you to dinner?

     

    TASHA: I told her I wasn’t ready yet for dinner, but I appreciated the offer•it’s always nice to be asked. (hesitates for a moment) You know Carmen will be at Bette’s tonight, too.

     

    SYDNEY:  It’ll be our first chance to meet.

     

    TASHA: You OK with that?

     

    SYDNEY: Do I have a choice?  (shaking her head) I just don’t know the rules, Tash.  You and Alice break-up, but we all stay friends.  Shane and Carmen…I’m not certain where any of us fit in.  It’s like we should have a jury decide who splits, who stays, etc.

     

    TASHA: It’s confusing.  We need an Emily Post for lesbian etiquette.  (Tasha pulls a piece of paper from her back pocket and unfolds it).  By the way, I wanted to show you this.

     

    Syd reads the letter and smiles broadly.

     

    SYDNEY:  You’re going to be a pilot!

     

    TASHA: (obviously proud and pleased) I guess all that flight time I logged in the Army is finally paying off.

     

    SYDNEY : (very sincerely) I’m so pleased for you and proud of you•and Nana will be too!  (Syd hugs Tasha) And besides, you’re gonna look great in that uniform!

     

    Tasha smiles and holds the hug as long as she can.

    1. I saw this pop up early in the week but waited to read it over the weekend. I wasn’t disappointed. I love this character’s maturity and passion for what she believes in. I relate to her wisdom yet insecurity–I mean, who hasn’t messed a bed to pretend it was slept in? I’ve read all the Syd stories (even re-read portions of the original re: the wonderful relationship conversation with Tasha and the revealing fireplace sceen). “Holidays” shows Syd’s vulnerable side. She’s still grounded, but unfocused and searching. Nicely written–it was a pleasant New Year’s surprise–thanks!
