    Bette discovers that Tina has been in an accident.

    “Of course.  Are you going to be okay?” His voice was filled with concern.  “If so, I’ll give you some privacy.”

    Bette nodded gratefully and he faded to a dim corner of the large room.  Bette noted the murmuring of several voices somewhere vaguely behind her.

    She leaned toward the bed, resting her hands on the metal bars, and whispered, “Baby?  Can you hear me?  It’s Bette.  I’m here.”  A lump rose in her throat but she swallowed it quickly, determined to be brave.  “I’ve been here all this time, T, waiting for you.  I’m just going to wait until you get better.  I’m not going anywhere without you baby.  Okay?  So you have to fight because I’m so lonely without you.  I need to see you smile, T.”  A sob erupted then and she choked on it unable to stop the tears.  Her heart was ripping in two and her chest ached.  “Please listen to me, Tina.  You have to try hard to get better, but you need to rest too, so don’t worry about me, okay?  I’m fine.  I’m eating, I promise, and my back is much better.  Everyone is here just waiting for you to get stronger so we can all be together again, okay honey?  So, I don’t want you to worry at all right now.  Kit is making sure I eat and Shane is getting me coffee.  Everything is okay for now, but I need you, T.  Nobody takes care of me like you do, baby.   I need you.  So you have to get better.  Until then, I’m gonna be right here.  I’m gonna read to you and play your favorite music and put on the movies you love.  I’m going to remind you of what you’re missing, okay T?  But you sleep now and when you wake up, I’ll be here.”  She so wanted to touch her, and turned to find the doctor.  When he saw Bette searching the room for him, he stepped out of the darkness.

    “Can I touch her hand?  Please?”  She asked urgently.  “I want her to know I’m here…she needs to know I’m here.”

    “Yes.  Just be careful of the tubes…”

    The feel of Tina’s soft skin gave Bette a moment’s reassurance.  It was Tina, she told herself, regardless of how she looked.

    “I love you more than you’ll ever know.  Come back to me, T.” 

    She pulled away reluctantly, wishing she could sleep in the room beside her.

    The doctor escorted her out and as they took off their gowns and masks Bette uttered, “Thank you.”  Her voice was stripped raw with emotion.  She sounded like a stranger to herself.  “May I see her again later?”

    “Yes.  Of course.  I’ll let you know if there are any changes.”  He showed her the way back to the family waiting room and left her in Kit and Shane’s care.

    9. I have just caught up with your story and it is heartbreaking. I know it is a word others have used, but there isn’t a better one to describe the feelings evoked by your story so far. Although there were those cute and tender pre-accident scenes, and it was lovely that Bette told Tina how she was feeling when they spoke on the phone. This is beautifully written – thank you!

    10. Thanks for posting this story. I love the way you have written the Tina and Bette characters. The love and trust they have for each other really comes through. I really like the way you wrote Tina in the first chapter. She is so nurturing with Bette and she does it in the cutest way. I really hope she makes a full recovery…Bette needs her.
