    Life Savers

It was early Wednesday morning and everyone was fast asleep in their assigned beds. The previous day had been surprisingly quiet. But that wouldn’t last for long in Bette Porters line of work. Bette has been a fire fighter for almost 5 years and a paramedic for 7 years. In the beginning she just wanted to be a paramedic but after being toned out with the fire department to a structure fire with a woman and child trapped, all that changed.

    *Flashback*.

Bette and her partner Jon were sitting at the station not long after lunch watching a movie when they got paged out to a structure fire with the 2 people trapped. They hurried into the truck and hit the lights and siren as they called in route on the radio. As they got closer they could see a large amount of smoke coming from the house. As they pulled up they saw three different fire trucks pull to a stop, everyone started jumping off and grabbing for different equipment. Bette and Jon got out of their truck and went around to the back to open the back doors and make sure they had everything ready. Once that was handled Bette sat on the floor of the truck with her feet on the back bumper. Bette had never seen everything that went on at a fire so was fascinated at what she saw.

She sat down just in time to see two full bunked out firefighters with a hose line kick down the front door and walk in. After the firefighters two more went and stood by the door to make sure they had enough of the hose line to go where they needed. A few minutes went by of firefighters doing various jobs. There were two on the roof cutting a hole so smoke could come out, there were several others walking around the house a couple busting out windows, and a few more at the trucks checking gauges and pulling equipment off and taking it to whomever needed it. Then she heard some of the firefighters yelling for her and Jon to get ready because they were about to bring them two patients. By this time another ambulance with two medics had arrived to assist with the patients. Bette watched as one of the firefighters came from in the house dragging a sheet with the woman on it. And the other was carrying a young girl that appeared to be 4 or 5. When they were brought over to the ambulances Bette and Jon took the woman while the other medics took the whimpering child. After making sure she was breathing and had a pulse, Bette put a NRB (nonrebreather mask) on her while Jon started checking her blood pressure and pulse rate. They then began to assess her and see if she had any burns or any other injuries. The woman opened her eyes and started asking about her daughter. Bette stepped out of the truck long enough to ask the other medics if the girl was alright. Bette told the mother that her daughter appeared to be fine but she would need to be checked out at the hospital. Bette then got in to the cab of truck and drove the hospital.
