Life and Love and Why – 23
Bette glanced at Tina. "Ready?"
"No."
Bette glanced behind them, at the front door of the home where Tina grew up. "You know that dinner won’t cook itself."
Tina shrugged. "It’s nothing fancy. I can finish it in two hours, max."
"Uh huh," Bette leaned closer to her. "So why are we here a full five hours beforehand?"
"Drawing courage," Tina admitted. "Just the idea of walking through that doorway is scaring the shit out of me."
"Memories?"
"I was pretty sure I’d never cross it again."
"You’re allowed to be wrong."
Tina smiled faintly. "Good thing you’re here, I might need that extra push to go through with this."
"I’ll hold your hand as long as I have to," Bette promised. "You know, figuratively."
Tina held her gaze. "I’m glad."
Bette smiled back.
Tina shrugged. "Besides, with Cathy and Karen having Cathy’s kids to see Dad, I really don’t want to be there."
Bette nodded, and settled back on her seat on the front steps of the Kennard home. She glanced out at the mid-afternoon scene, the quiet background painted with the afternoon sun. It was peaceful, she had to admit, and she wished, for the sake of the blonde beside her, that the peacefulness would last.
It seemed so simple: prepare dinner for Tina’s family.
But it wasn’t so simple. It would be a dinner where there would be talking. Plenty of talking. Talking among people who had more than shared history, there was also ten years of grudgery involved. Saner people would recommend having other dinner plans. Their friends— her friends, Bette corrected herself — would recommend getting on the next plane back to LA and leave Tina to fix this herself.
But that was asking for the impossible.
Tina glanced at Bette. "You know, I’m actually more nervous right now than the first time we were here."
Bette smiled at the bittersweet memory. "You were so sure they’d like me."
"Yale graduate, successful, classy and beautiful? How could anyone resist?" Tina smiled faintly. "I couldn’t."
"Because a conservative family wouldn’t jump for joy when someone says she’s gay?" Bette guessed.
Tina wrung her hands. "You know, for each one of my boyfriends, my parents always said I deserved someone better."

WOW!!! Bette should not have pick up the phone. Tina was opening up and talking to her. Bad Bette!!! Thanks PPS
That fucking, Jodi. When is she going to DIE!!!!!!!!!!!! And Bette picking up that DAMN phone; has she not learned anything yet. DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!! Great post.
That last part broke my heart a tiny bit. Put it back together, won’t you, tiff? Fantastic as usual!
LOL – I echo brwnsuga’s sentiments exactly. But, your B&T have never, ever made things easy for the reader, and you’ve yet to let us down. Please take good care of their hearts…
Unfair or fair what Jodi wants or expects, what’s it to do with anything when she and Bette were supposed to be over? And Bette? Caller display is a handy invention. Use it with extreme prejudice next time. Maybe she just wasn’t quite ready to hear what Tina had to say, but still… Looking forward to the next post, tiff. Thanks
damit why did u let a bloody call come in and why oh why did u et Bette get it, she coulda ignored the friggin thing!!! BETTE BETTER MAKE IT UP TO TINA!!!!! U make me feel like screaming!!!!
that mobile phone thing – so easily done i do it all the time & have to be reminded to pay attention to the one i’m with. Tiff as ever you know how the world works…
Wow. My heart breaks and feels hopeful all at once for these two! Love the way you’re weaving this story with such precise and lovely emotions PPS
Did Bette pick up the phone b/c she didn’t want to continue the convo w/Tina? You tell a story so beautifully. It just simply unfolds.
Fabulous chapter Tiff. Bette has got to know who her heart belongs to and it is certainly not Jodi, but you can tell that she is still hurting over Tina picking Henry over her. They still have work to do and at least with both of them being away together, Jodi isn’t there to horn in all the time. Can’t wait for the next one Tiff!
Sometimes you know better and you do it anyway. Unfortunately.
damn that Jodi, can’t she leave Bette alone? bad timing too…hopefully it didn’t ruin everything they’ve built back so far
Very nice…sitting & talking…honesty…& BAM the moment is lost…damn Jodi & her talking Tom! PPS!
Bad timing, great chapter! PPS
why did she pick up the phone especially after recognizing it was Tom…
Hmmm…well…hmmm. I’m not sure what to say. Maybe Tina felt the same. Or felt it wasn’t the right place or time for THAT conversation. It’s already going to be heavy going for Tina in the next few hours. Perhaps it was overload.
Love the latest twist… it should be quite an evening.
Their seesaw gives me vertigo, how do they live with the extreme ups and downs? But your writing is realistic. The highs are worth the lows. Thanks!
Great update and was so sad at the end – damn jodi – always getting in the way! Tina was just opening up to talk to Bette..sigh! Please make it right. Thank you :)
Sigh..just when things were going well. Guess Bette have to work harder but at least she knows almost immediately that she shouldn’t have pull away and not figure this out in a day or weeks time. Thanks for sharing Tiff!
Leaving silentville for a while to say thank you for writing this amazingly realistic and heart-tugging story. I’ve been a fan of your work for so long. You’re immensely talented :) Post when you can, we’ll be waiting :)
would love to know what goes on in your head. sometimes just so conditioned to answer and pull away. thx
Wow, painful, but I believe that Bette will come to the decision that Tina is the one that she wants and needs. She just needs to end with Jodi go inside and let Tina know that she is the it girl.
DAMN IT, Bette!!!!! Why the hell did Bette answer that call? She saw who it was and should have ignored the damned thing. She needed to let Tina talk. Will they ever learn? Hope Tina will continue her thoughts to Bette. Well, HELL!!!!!!!!! Great post. Thanks for posting.
What were you thinking of Bette? Yale graduates should know better… PS: my parent would’ve resisted too but still =)
Even answering the phone on reflex is so not going to cut it. They were actually talking about their downward spiral…actually getting into it, and they have all 3 hours before preparing dinner. Tiff, please, can you post tomorrow? Please? Beg?
Great tension and drama – and WOW – evolution that makes sense!
Cliffhanger….I wonder if Bette wasn’t thinking or if she was being passive aggressive or afraid to hear what Tina had to say but for whatever reason she just set them back. I hope she doesn’t run home to Jodi now. That would be heartbreaking :(
Tiff I love your writing. But I was in the minority that didn’t love Bette’s retelling last chapter. Your writing is superb as always – but I felt her heart wasn’t really in it. It felt rather flat for me. (not your writing, but Bette’s attitude) I’m also in the minority who didn’t think 3rd season was entirely Tina’s ‘fault’ – so I’m curious to see where you take that conversation. Thanks for this chapter and post soon!
i vote with Azmama and Sammer and the others who think Bette was more scared of hearing what Tina had to say than worried about who was on the other line. I too am excited to hear them discuss Tina’s affair. I think Bette knows where they both want to end up, but ‘processin’to get there, has never been their strong point. Tina was trying and she bailed. oy.
Why Bette why you pick up the damn phone, that stupid phone and bitch jodi should throw out the window for ruin our B&T’s moment. Please post more, thanks!
Ah…Bette…have you heard of voice-mail? Tiff, 5 star rating to you for: 1. Addressing why Tina cheated on Bette. That has never really been addressed by the L Word in a face-to-face Tina/Bette conversation. Can we see more of that, please? 2. That you know the difference between Quarterback and Running back (impressive from a die-hard NFL fan), and 3., just that you are so awesome! Every word you write: says, describes and emotes. Powerful writing! Bravo bella!
Silent communication is often the loudest. And most painful.
