Lest I Forget (24)
Dr. Hernandez came in not too long after I’d finished the first part of my story. He gave me a warm greeting and then said hello to Alice, and I was happy to see that she was able to communicate with him a little bit through sign. He apologized that he didn’t know more himself, and then started to speak. It was obvious that he was talking to both of us, but he addressed Alice, and I was happy about it.
“We should be able to move you to a more private room in a day or so, Alice. Results from the monitors have been consistent since you were moved in here, and I see no reason to keep you under constant observation much longer. I’ll work on getting you situated somewhere a little more private,” he said, and Alice smiled at him gratefully. I think she was getting sick of the room. Looking around, I agreed with her that it was more than a little bit boring.
“We’ll still need to keep a close eye on you, but we’ll hold off on any of the physical therapy until next week. I do want to have a nurse try to get you into a wheelchair, though. It’ll be a struggle at first, but the sooner you can do that, the easier the rest of the process is going to be.
“Once we get you all set up and able to ride around in the chair, we’ll start with some small exercises to build up muscle strength. During that time, we’ll also have you learn some more sign language if your hands are able to handle it, and we’ll start to discuss possibilities for long-term care.”
As soon as he said “long-term care,” Alice’s eyes shot toward me in what looked like a sort of panic. I took her hand and squeezed it gently, trying to tell her that it was all right and that we’d talk later. She sighed in frustration, but looked back at the doctor.
He appeared to be a little troubled by her reaction, and glanced at me apologetically. “I didn’t mean to upset you, Alice. Given your progress during the short time you’ve been in this room, I’m fairly certain you won’t need round the clock care. Still, I do think an assisted living facility might be the way to go.” Catching the flash of fear on Alice’s face, he stopped. “Please don’t worry about it, though. By the time you’re ready to be released, there’s no telling how far along you’ll be. Let’s just wait and see until that time.”

That was a wonderful chapter. Glad that Shane maded the crib/ and Jenny go the bumper pad now let bring that baby home.
awesome, awesome chapter!!
Yay! Really getting into this story now!! :D:D
Woo hoo!!! Great update. So happy that Alice and Dana are doing well at the moment and that Alice may get a new room soon and start rehab. I feel so much for both women on the long-term care thing. I have faith in you to take care of them on this. Even though I know Kallie ends up with Alice and Dana, it is still a bit of a emotional rollercoaster reading about the journey to get there. I love that Dana, who is usually so bad with words, had no problem with the essay on the forms. “They’ll never let us have her if they think you’re high on speed.” — Hee! Hopefully the biological mother doesn’t show up. Although I do like Dana’s viewpoint on that — at least they are saving Kallie from bouncing around the system. Excellent!! I hope your groove continues. Thanks you so much MT!!
MT, I continue to enjoy your humor in this chapter. Again the writing was fantastic. Both A & D being all nervous about the process was palpable. I also like the fact that Shane made the bed for Kallie and Jenny adding the bedding. Very touching. It saddens me to think of the whole rehab issue. I sincerely hope that A would recuperate well enough to stay in the house with D forever. THANK YOU very much!
