Lest I Forget (18)
“His fever seems to have gone down overnight, but Angie’s keeping him home today so he can rest. A lot like I’m doing with you. No arguments, I don’t want you out of this bed. I’m sure the sleep helped and I know the medication is making you feel better, but I don’t want you leaving this room unless it’s to use the bathroom.” He said it so sternly that I laughed.
“You’re funny when you try to get authoritative, Charles,” I joked, and he shook his head at me and grinned.
“I mean it, Ma. I want you to get better. Mom’s already sick and with Brendan under the weather too, I’m not really doing so well. I need you to rest up.”
I looked at him and realized for the first time how much this had to be affecting him. I’d known he was stressed out about it from the beginning, but seeing just how deep the dark circles under his eyes were, I felt horrible. I reached out and took his hand.
“I’m going to be fine, Charlie. I promise.”
He sighed. “You’d better be. I don’t think I can handle you not being okay.”
“I’ll be all right. It’ll go away soon,” I replied.
“Yeah, if you get enough rest to let the medication do any good. I want you to stay here today and just get rested up, okay? I’ll go to the hospital,” he said.
I opened my mouth to say something, but I stopped before I could. Arguing with him wasn’t going to do me any good, and I knew he was right. It made me absolutely crazy, but I knew he was right. “Okay,” I conceded finally.
“If you stay here and rest, you’ll get better a lot faster than if you try to go to the hospital today anyway, Ma. Besides, Mom needs some real rest. She’s been sleeping, but she’s obviously been worried about you. You don’t look too healthy, and she sees that. So I think if you take the day off today it’ll be a lot better for both of you in the long run,” he explained. I just nodded, not knowing what else to do.
“I’ll go over there and talk to Dr. Hernandez, and he’ll let me know where we’ll go from here. I want you to rest, but I’ll call and fill Shane in, and she’ll tell you. Okay?” he asked, touching my shoulder so I’d look at him. I met his eyes and smiled.

Another great chapter, MT! You are really on a roll with this one. I am glad Charlie helped Dana understand that she really needed to get herself healthy and take better care of herself. Love all the ShaDane in this chapter. They have a great rapport. The toast thing was pretty funny. And it seems like a very “Jenny” peculiarity. It seems realistic and a little sad that Shane and Jenny felt the need to hide their relationship when it first started. Dana already seems to be doing better. A little more rest and she should be ready to see Alice again. And I sure it will help Alice to see Dana looking rested. Thanks so much for the quick update!!
hey, sorry I have not left a comment in awhile…just got caught up on the last 4 chaps and they have been brilliant!!!
LMAO, Jenny and her toasts. Can you be more humorous? MaGoose pretty much summed it all up. I thank you for yet another excellent post in such a short time. What a nice surprise! I hope you got the sleep that you so deserved. Looking forward to D going back to see A again. THANK YOU!
