Late Morning (Time of Day 9)

She tried to ignore the phone, especially after she saw that it wasn’t Tasha calling. But somehow, Alice couldn’t let herself not answer. “Hey Bette.”

    “Al, how’s it going?”

Alice was splayed on the couch, still dressed from the party. “How do you think it’s going?” She put her head back on the couch pillow.

    “Oh, right. Tasha.”

“Right.” Alice made a face at the phone. “Tasha.”

“You went to her party, then?”

    “Yeah. How’d you know?”

    “I called Tina.”

“Of course.” As Alice talked she sniffed at her clothes, wondering how long she should stay smelling like the wood smoke of the fire. “So, while you’re off playing Bette Juan, Tasha’s off to somewhere so that she can go to Iraq.”

    “I’m sorry, Al.”

Alice wondered if maybe she didn’t get the dress cleaned. Would that help her remember last night? “I know. It’s just, I keep losing everyone I love.”

    “Alice.”

“You know it’s true, Porter. I lost you to Tina.”

Bette’s voice gave away her incredulous attitude. “I was never your great love, Alice.”

“But I still lost you. I lost Dana forever. And now Tasha?” Alice grabbed a napkin off the coffee table and blew her nose. “But hey, how’s the love of your life?”

    “Jodi was very surprised.”

“I’m sure. It’s not every day that you commit larceny for someone.”

“I don’t think it counts as larceny if they were going to destroy it anyway,” Bette countered in her best Dean voice. “Anyway, I was wondering if you could do a favor for me.”

“Does it involve dogs, barbed wire fence, and a chance at 1 to 3 years?”

    “No, Alice, it doesn’t.”

    “Okay, then. What?”

“Could you give Tina a message for me?”

Alice contemplated this whole situation for a moment. Bette, off on some huge romantic mission, was calling her in the middle of the morning, a morning where she should have known that Alice would be a total wreck, so that Alice could pass along a message to Tina. The same Tina that Bette spoke with on the phone the night before.

There seemed only one appropriate answer, and Alice made sure she spoke it clearly. “No.”

    “Excuse me?”

“I said no, Bette. If you want to talk to Tina, call her.”

“I can’t just call her, Alice.”

“You just called me.” Alice gave the phone the finger, which made her feel just a tiny bit better. “If you can bother me, you can bother Tina.”

“Al, I’m sorry, but it’s different.”

“Different? How is it that my feelings aren’t as valid as yours, Bette? Or as Tina’s?”

“I can’t call Tina if she’s with Kate. I just think that would be…awkward.”

“Well she’s not fucking with Kate, so just call her, Porter.”

    “What do you mean?”

“I mean, Kate left early last night. Tina stuck around until dawn when Helena was muttering something about taking her out for breakfast.”

    “So you’re saying?”

“I’m saying deal with your women, Porter. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some B&J’s Cherry Garcia that wants me to feel better.”

“Okay.” Bette sounded confused, and almost humbled. “And Alice, thanks.”

    “Yeah.”

Alice snapped the phone closed. She sniffed again at the dress. If she shut her eyes she could maybe, just for a moment, imagine Tasha’s arms around her.

But all it was was a memory now, and that wasn’t fucking good enough.

    Comments

    1. Very enjoyable. I could totally see them having that conversation. I must take the time to read the others in this series. Bette really does need to handle her women. Thanks for posting this. I really did enjoy this.

    2. I like that Alice told Bette to deal w/her women and stop asking friends to Cyrano de Bergerac for her. Jodi (gulp, hate to say it) was right about Bette needing a relationship that works FOR her. She needs an entourage of helpers. Come on Bette, DEAL.

    3. I loved this Alice saying No to Bette made me so happy. Deal with your women Porter – you are so very much fun to read. Thanks for keeping these posts going – more please?!?

    4. Great as usual. I love that we can always count on Alice to say it as it is. How is it that Bette can call Tina for advice to help get Jodi, but she can’t call her just to call. IC’s got Bette all confused. First she all alpha again, then she’s a basket case, then weepy, then scared, and then suddenly when it comes to Tina, Bette can’t read her.If I wasn’t so fond of the hair on my head, I swear I’d be pulling it out.

    5. much better than the finale where bette is even more clueless when it comes to others…she needs to open her eyes and see what’s in front of her

    6. Uh, yeah, if Bette is SOOO controlling (and so alpha?), why is she jumping through hoops for the one who’s crapped all over her repeatedly? When did the high-powered, no-nonsense executive become a servile bootlick? Oh wait, I know, IC morphed her to suit HER executive, inexplicable whim like she did to just about everybody in S3. Is Bette trying to please Tina in some sick and convoluted way (and is Tina still punishing Bette with her “friendly” advice?), because this can’t be construed as growth. Wish the other characters were kicking Bette’s ass about Jodi like Alice did here and they have done with Helena re: Catherine. And you, unlike IC, gave Alice a reason for having acted like such a butthole with Tasha before the party. Hope you all enjoyed the season finale.

    7. I agree that Bette “can’t see the forest for the trees” or in this case, she can’t see the tree (thaat’s directly in front of her) for the forest. And YES, this use MUCH the the finale, IC SUCKS. Please continue :o).

    8. After all this time, Bette is still so frustratingly self-absorbed. It’s one of the things she desperately needs to have throttled out of her. I wonder who could deliver the smackdown? Hmm… Anyway, thanks for the post, pseud.
