Last Call (Time of Day 6)

The bar was almost empty. Small wonder, at the late hour. Shane noticed a few others around, but wasn’t really interested in any of them. Not tonight. Who knows if that would change, but right now she only was interested in one woman. But that woman had gone home, taking her son with, and leaving Shane to find her own company in a place where she was comfortable.

As she straddled the bar stool, Shane motioned for the bartender, and pointed out what she wanted from the tap. Placing a bill on the bar, she happened to glance to her left, and noticed a familiar person, someone totally unexpected, occupying a stool a couple seats down.

Intrigued, Shane shifted herself over, sitting next to the woman. “Come here often?”

The woman rolled the stem of her martini glass between the fingers of her right hand. “I’m not…” she turned to meet the eyes of the intruder. “Shane? What are you doing here?”

“I feel like I should be the one asking that question, Tina.”

The blonde looked at her almost-empty glass. “I guess sometimes you don’t want to go where everybody knows your name.”

    “Like the Planet?”

    “Yeah. Like that.”

“Can I get you something? A cab? Call Henry?”

Tina scoffed. “Henry’s the last thing I need right now.”

“I suppose that’s why you came to the party with that woman.”

“Well, I was supposed to have a work meeting with that woman. But I guess.”

The two sat in silence for a few moments.

Finally, Tina downed the last sip in her glass, and continued. “It’s really hard, you know?”

    “What?”

“Seeing her. Seeing her so happy.”

It took Shane just a moment. “Bette?”

“Yeah.” Tina wiped at a tear. “I suppose I look like the world’s biggest loser, hiding out here in the middle of the night.”

“You should have come out with us. You know, spend time with friends.”

“Other than Bette’s invitation, and going to do the baby-exchange at the Planet, people haven’t exactly been rushing to put me on their social card.”

    “C’mon, Tina, you’ve got friends.”

“I do?” Tina pointed at her glass. The bartender eased herself away from the redhead that she’d been chatting up and started to mix another.

    1. I love how you always get it. The last few episodes its like you just want to grab both of them and tell them to just tell each other and get on with it. Tina’s letting her know bit by bit that she still cares, Bette’s just been a bit slow on picking it up. Jodi is just a phase, Bette’s heart belongs to Tina, at least in my version of the show.

    2. I think most of the fans were waiting for a continuation of What If, I know that I was. Both stories are good and I love your writings. I love Lamentamini’s comment about the aliens taking the words out of Tina’s mouth but probably more like the aliens taking the resonable thinking out of her.

    3. Hey Pseud, Many thanks for another wonderful vinigrette. I totally agree with your rationale. There was doublt in Tina’s eyes when she told Bette to stop running away from Jodi. Maybe it was the fear of being hurt again. I believe that Tina wants to be with Bette but isn’t sure if she is worthy of the task after seeing the depth and connection visible if Bette and Jodi’s relationship. Perhaps it is the old saying “If you love somethinf let in go. If it comes back to you then it is yours. If not, then it never was.” Fabuous fan fiction. Please continue with your stories soon. Your Loyal Fan.

    4. Tina, you wanted your autonomy? Granted. Too bad it wasn’t what you actually wanted… I do feel REALLY badly for her… and I’m not as big of Bette&Jodi fan as I used to be. I guess I just hope they find their way back to one another, in the end. Fantastic as always. Really… just… so good. Thank you.

    5. Great post! I really fill badly for Tina…what is to become of her relationship with the gang and most of all with Bette? Would you consider continuing this story?

    6. Has Tina found an interesting time to get all noble or is she just scared? By the way I found the other story intriguing and would like to see how you work that one out.

    7. It ain’t over ’til it’s over… Jodi’s just a minor obstacle, for now. Easy to overcome. It’ll just take a bit of time, is all. Yeah. *sigh* Anyway, thanks for the post, pseud.

    8. B&TF, that would make way too much sense. It’s IC’s aliens…they took the words right out of Tina’s mouth. pseud, I didn’t comment on that other story because I have never seen Bad Girls and didn’t know what to think of it. However I do enjoy these short pieces you do. I actually thought this would be a return of Shina since I recall you doing one of those a long time ago (set somewhere between Seasons 1 and 2).
