It Must Be 4 a.m. Somewhere

After going three straight days without talking to Alice, Dana was surprised to find herself on the blonde’s doorstep, hesitantly raising her hand to knock.  She pulled her hand away.  “*****, what am I going to say?” she mumbled aloud.

She rehearsed the scene mentally.  Hi, Alice.  I just came to apologize and say that I want you back.  Can we go have mind-blowing make up ***** now?  Dana frowned and smacked herself on the forehead.  Not the best approach.

Dana paced the length of the hallway in front of Alice’s apartment door.  Okay, this could go one of two ways.  One:  Alice could decide to let Dana in and listen to what she said, or two:  Alice could slam the door in her face.  Dana frowned as she thought of a third, previously unrealized possibility:  Alice could let her in, listen to what she said, get angry and kick Dana out, and then slam the door in her face.

Dana bit her lip.  Too many of these scenarios ended with Alice slamming the door in her face.  That couldn’t be a good sign.  She looked down at her sweaty hands, wiping them off on the seat of her jeans and willing them to stop shaking.  *****, I should have brought flowers or something.  I’m going to look like a total dweeb.  I always manage to ***** up and look stupid in these situations.

“Alice?  We need to talk,” Dana practiced aloud, mumbling quietly under her breath.  Okay, Dane, that’s a good start, now keep going.  “I’m sorry about the fight we had.”  Come on Fairbanks!  Think!  You can come up with something better than that!  Dana wrung her hands together, cracking her knuckles nervously.  “I’m sorry about the fight we had.  I take full responsibility for my part of the argument.”  You sound like somebody’s mother!  Dana shook her hands out at her sides and bounced up in down in place, trying to loosen up and psyche herself.  “I’m sorry about the fight we had.  It was my fault just as much as it was yours.”  Better.  “I’ve missed you horribly these past three days.  Can I come in so we can talk about this?”

Dana nodded to herself, satisfied that she was now getting somewhere with her speech.  She froze when she heard a noise at Alice’s door.  “Is somebody out there?”  she heard Alice’s voice call through the door.
