Chapter 4

Bette walks in the door at home, its just four oclock. Shes early. Tina is not home. Shes meeting the girls on her daily trip to The Planet.
Bette goes into the bedroom and changes into more comfortable clothes. Then she make some tea, and takes it into the living room, se lay herself down on the sofa, with a blanket over her. She takes one sip of the tea, and falls asleep.
About an hour later, Tina comes home, shes surprised to see Bette home so early, and by the looks of it, she has been home for a while. She walks quietly into the kitchen and order dinner, Chinese. Twenty minutes later the food arrives. She puts it on the living room table. Then she goes down on her knees beside Bette, who is still sleeping. She kisses her on her forehead softly.
Baby, wake up. Tina says as she moves down and kisses her on the cheek. It takes a few moments for Bette to open her eyes.
I fell asleep. Bette says as she sits up.
Yes, you did, you came home early, why didnt you call me? I couldve come home. Tina says, removing a string of hear from Bettes face and put it behind her ears.
I didnt want to disturb you, Im not a good company anyway. Bette says and smiles.
Well, I bought dinner, are you hungry? Tina asks as she stands up and walks into the kitchen, and comes back with a couple of forks.
Yes, actually Im very hungry. Bette says. Tina takes a seat next to Bette on the sofa.
So how was your day? Tina asks as she starts to eat.
Bette takes a bite first, before she answers.
Of, the same old, same old. I was just so tired, so I took the afternoon off. I didnt have any energy left. Bette hates to lie to Tina, but she doesnt think this is the right moment. They are actually talking. It has been so long since the last time they just talked.
Why dont you stay home tomorrow, call in sick? Tina asks
I would love to, but I cant, I just have to get through this week, get the show open, then I will take a hole week off. Bette says and smiles to Tina.
Okay, but please promise me, that you will take it easy, I dont want you to get sick or anything. Tina says.
That last sentence, played over and over in Bettes head, sick sick sick
They finish their dinner. And Bette clears her head.
So how was your day? Bette asks back.
My day has been good, Ive cleaned the hole house, and then I went to the Planet. Shane is doing hair on a new movie with Angelina Jolie and Heath Ledger. Tina ads. Wow, she is? Thats good for her, shes making connections. Bette says
Tina brings the left-over to the fridge.
Tina, I think Im going to bed, Im so tired. Bette says as she gets up and walks towards the bedroom.
Ill join you. I just have to call Alice first. Tina says as she reaches for the phone.
Why do you have to call Alice? Bette asks curiously.
I said I would stop by her later, Shane and Danas there too, but Ill cancel it, Ill stay here with you. Tina says.
No, dont cancel. Go! Im just going to sleep anyway you need it. Bette says. Are you sure? Tina asks as she moves in close to Bette.
Yes, Im sure, go, and say hello from me. Bette replies and kiss Tina softly on the lips, they say goodbye.
Ill see you tomorrow, drive carefully. Bette says.
I will. Bye. Tina says as she closes the door.
Bette walks straight into the bedroom, and into bed, she falls quickly asleep. But it doesnt take long before the shooting pain erupts, and she screams out loud and begins to cry, she hold her hand on the leg while she hold the other hand over her mouth. The pain slowly goes away and she cries herself to sleep.
A few days later-
Bette wakes up, Tina is still sleeping. She get up and goes into the bathroom to take a quick shower. She get dressed and leaves for work without waking Tina.
The set design is almost ready for the opening. And then there is the hanging of the artwork left. Candace Jewell and her crew are still working there. As Bette walks in through the main entrance, Candace watches her as she passes and walks into the office area. A few minutes later Bette comes back out from her office and goes to the toilet. She has to walk past Candace. Bette doesnt look at her. I hope she doesnt follow, Ive told her no. Bette thinks. While shes washing her hands, Candace walks in, and stops beside Bette.
I cant stop thinking about you. Candace says as she looks at Bettes reflection in the mirror. I told you no before. Bette says firmly, drying her hands on a paper towel, and turns to walk out. Candace stops her. I need to kiss you, I want you. Candace continues. I cant Bette replies.
Candace moves in to kiss her, she doesnt move. Bettes mind went completely blank at that moment. Their lips meet, Bette doesnt resist, she just stands there, completely zoned out. When she finally comes to herself, she push Candace away, and walk out of the room and into her office. She closes the door and sits down on the sofa. What the ***** am I doing? She says quietly to herself. The next two hours, before she has to go to the hospital, she doesnt get any work done. She only looks through a few artist presentations.
She pick up her purse, walks out past James Ill be back in an hour or so She says, he nods.
-At the hospital-
Bette Porter, youre up. The reception lady calls out. She walks in to the treatment-room. Theres nurse waiting. Hey, Bette, how are you feeling? the nurse asks. Im tired a lot of the time. Bette replies.
Yeah, thats normal when you take chemo. The nurse answers. She put the IV in and hangs up the bag and walks out of the room, so Bette can have some alone-time. After a few minutes Dr. Wilson enters, she smiles to Bette. Hey, just popped in to say hi. Dr. W. says Hi Bette replies.
Youre feeling okay? Dr. W. asks. Yes, just tired. Bette replies.
So have you told Tina yet? Dr. W. asks.
No, not yet Dr. Wilson gives her a look. I know, I should have told her right away, but we havent talked about the loss of the baby yet. Ive tried so many times, but I cant seem to get through to her. She says she isnt ready. Bette says.
Its been a month, it will eat her up inside, you have to get her to open up. Dr. Wilson says
At home, Tina just got back from the Planet. She takes out the vacuum-cleaner, and carry it into the bedroom. She started to vacuum the floor, she pushed it under the bed, and something got stuck. She pulls it out, and its a black paper bag. She turns off the cleaner, and looks inside.
Its a present and it has a card;
