If it is meant to be…Chapter 21
Bette and Tina were riding up the elevator to Bette’s room, talking about the nights events…the younger, more casual crowd at The Wild Rose, and the more formal, older crowd at the Fox Dinner Club. Both places inviting in their own way. And Bette being who she is, couldn’t resist teasing Tina one more time about her salmon recipe.
“Come on Tina. Do you really have a secret salmon recipe? And if you do, where did you get it?”
Tina laughed. “Bette, you can’t live in Seattle and not have a recipe for cooking salmon. That would be like living in Maine and not knowing how to cook a lobster! Besides, why do you care? If I remember correctly, my recipe wouldn’t do you any good anyway, little Miss I Can’t Even Toast Bread Without Burning It Porter!”
Looking indignant, Bette crossed her arms. “Hey, I resemble that remark!” Both women giggled as the door to the elevator slid open. They walked out, heading for Bette’s room. “I’m waiting Tina.”
Tina smiled, realizing that Bette was not letting it go. “Ok, Ok…Dan’s father was a commercial fisherman, so he was always bringing home fresh salmon when Dan was growing up. Over the years, his mother tried every recipe she could, looking for a variety of ways to serve it, so Dan and his sister wouldn’t get tired of it. But, the funny part was, the best recipe, turned out to be the simplest one…which I’m not going to divulge to you. So there…you’ll just have to try it. Now…can we talk about something else…” They were now standing outside the room. Tina arched her eyebrow, leaned against the wall, with her hip thrusting out, and in a very soft, sultry voice said, “I mean, I hope you didn’t invite me up to your room Ms. Porter, just to talk about fish. What an incredible waste that would be!”
On hearing Tina’s voice, and seeing her seductive stance, Bette fumbled with the key card, trying to get the door unlocked. After three or four more tries, she looked over at Tina with resignation on her face. “Jesus Tina! Tina just chuckled and took the key card from Bette, slipped it in the slot, and presto, opened the door. She walked in the room and swinging her head back towards Bette as she walked by, whispered…”Coming Baby?”
Bette just stood there, rooted to the spot, shocked…and totally turned on by Tina’s brazen behavior. ‘Where the ***** is that coming from?’ She tried to move her feet, but they were locked into place, and as she watched Tina, who was watching her with an incredibly ***** look on her face…the door to the room swung shut right in Bette’s face.
Bette just stood there with her mouth open, not believing that she was now staring at the closed door to her room, listening to the loud laughter coming from the other side. She was absolutely mortified.
Tina on the other hand thought it was the funniest thing in the world. She couldn’t help her laughter. In part, because it really was funny, but also because up until now, she wasn’t quite sure what kind of physical affect she was having on Bette. She knew that Bette loved her, but because she had been holding back physically, Tina didn’t quite know where she stood…until now. Her relief came out in the form of more laughter. However, she didn’t want Bette to be uncomfortable, so she pulled the door open, and stopped laughing long enough to grab Bette’s arm and quickly pull her into the room. “Get in here Porter!”
Bette allowed Tina to drag her into the room, totally embarrassed and not able to look her in the eye. But, that only lasted for a moment, because even Bette Porter could see the humor in this situation. She laid her hands on Tina’s hips. “God T, I can’t believe I just did that.” She shook her head laughing. “Are you sure you want to be with me…because clearly I am not the suave charmer I use to be. Now, I can’t even seem to make it into my own room, let alone do anything once I’m there!”
Tina got a serious look on her face. “Well Bette…now that you are here, did you want to do anything?”
Bette stood there looking at Tina for a moment. She leaned forward and softly kissed her, just enough to let Tina know she was serious. “I do T…I really do, but there is something I need to share with you first. Something I hope you can help me with.” Bette blew out a breath. “Something I need to come to peace with before I can be intimate with you…which is exactly what I want to be.” She hoped Tina could see the sincerity in her eyes and would understand.
Tina leaned forward and placed her own kiss on Bette’s lips. “Ok Bette. Let’s order that tea and you can tell me what’s on your mind.”
Bette nodded her head in relief and walked over to the phone and ordered a pot of tea. “Tina? While we are waiting for the tea, I have something I want to give you. I brought it with me from New York. I don’t know why I haven’t given to you yet, but I really want you to have it.”
“What is it Bette?”
Bette walked into her bedroom, and almost immediately walked back out with a long thin rectangular box, that had been wrapped in a beautiful silver paper, etched with flowers. “I bought this about ten years ago during one of my trips to Venice. I don’t know why I bought it. I don’t normally shop for jewelry when I am traveling for the galleries, but I saw this, and I couldn’t take my eyes off it. It was like it was pulling me to it. It has become one of my favorites over the years, and now I hope it will become one of yours.”
Tina carefully unwrapped the box, and gently opened it up. She let out a soft gasp and looked up at Bette. “Oh Bette, it’s beautiful. Are you sure you want to give this to me?”
Bette lifted the antique silver necklace out of it’s box and held it out for Tina. “Tina, when I saw you wearing your locket…” Bette reached out and fingered the locket that Tina had been wearing around her neck every day since their dinner in New York, “and how much it obviously means to you, I knew that this necklace would go perfectly with it. The two silvers are an exact match. It’s just the right length…and well I notice that the necklace you have, doesn’t quite…” She didn’t know how to finish that sentence without offending Tina.
Tina squeezed Bette’s hand and chuckled. “It’s Ok Bette. When Shane gave me this locket, I didn’t have a nice necklace to go with it…and before I had a chance to buy one…I met Dan…so I never got around to it. This necklace is so perfect, Baby…thank you.” Tina reached around and unclasped the necklace she was wearing, and replaced it with the gorgeous silver necklace, that up until a few days ago, had been around Bette’s neck.
Bette took the necklace from Tina. “May I?”
Tina pulled her hair over to the side, while Bette moved behind her, fastening the jewelry around her neck.
Just then there was a knock on the door. Bette walked over to allow the room service attendant in and set up the tea. When he quietly left the room, Bette poured them both a cup of tea, adding cream and sugar to each cup, and handed Tina hers.
Bette sat down on the opposite end of the couch from Tina, who was sitting patiently waiting for her. Bette curled her legs up under her and took a deep breath. “Tina, I…” She looked down and stared at her tea cup for a moment, then looked back up. “It’s about Nica…”

You did it to us again. This so bad of you. And you called lisa a little…t. I just know that you are laughing at us. We are just hanging here in your web of frustration. PLEASE POST the TALK for us. Thanks , I’m not MAD just want to know.
I wondered, while hoping not, if it had to do with a promise made to Nica. I guess I just have to wait (again) to find out :) Great chapter!
Love the way you write even if you’re dangerously teasing us
Are you trying to gain the rank of Grand Master Tease, like Lizzard and her cohorts? You are evil, woman, leaving us out to dry like this. I just hope you submit the TBC ASAP!
“…she made me promise never to sleep with another woman.”
Nnnnnoooooo!!!!!!!!
All I can say is Shame on you. I am so disappointed, so disappointed. everyone else has scolded you pretty good, I won’t since they have. but I hope that you post ASAP, you have alot of frustrated and disappointed readers right now.
I can not believe Nica would make Bette make a promise not to be with anyone again. If anything, I would bet that Nica made Bette promise to find another love, or better yet, go find Tina!
Ok, I know, I’m stretching! I can’t help it.
Thanks for the story and I really laughed out loud with the door thing! Ha, ha, ha!
OMG.. You stopped there??I so want to know what’s up with Bette… More soon, pretty please?
Um, Nica died instantly in an accident if memory serves me correctly. I really don’t think she made Bette promise sh*t! LOL. You are the queen of cliffhanger girly!
A very funny chapter, and it seems that you aren’t popular right now, for the way you let the chapter end. Will go figure Drama! Katey 471 you are right she did die instantly ( stepping off a curb in the path of a car while x-mas shopping) how sad is that. I will anxiously be waiting for the BIG Conversation which seems to be in slow motion. Excellent chapter.
this is a great chapter – i hope this thing about Nica is fixable.
please hurry with the next post.

Did Nica ask Bette to make sure that her next woman has to get along with their daugther?
Oh no you did not!!!
To quote Katey 471: “Um, Nica died instantly in an accident if memory serves me correctly. I really don’t think she made Bette promise sh*t! LOL.”
Ha! Nica’s spirit came to Bette at the instant of her death, ala Bob, I mean, JACOB Marley’s ghost. Nica shook her chains and got Bette to promise to be celebate and continue the galleries. Ha!
I have never seen this many comments for a fic. You’ve got us hanging, Seahurst!
this is good…dare i say that i’m getting hooked. more! now!
Maybe Bette had an affair on Nica too? Nica stormed out and got in the wreck. Or maybe Bette told Nica that she has always loved Tina; Nica got upset, left and got in the wreck? Whatever the case, we are at your mercy. Fantastic story. Kepp it up.
