How We Do Things Here – Chapter 11

Bette dropped heavily on her bed and closed her eyes. Days like this wore her out, emotionally more so than physically. She cursed quietly as the sounds of crashing brought her to her feet. Walking into the bathroom, she leant against the door frame and observed her elder sister stumbling toward the toilet.

Bette grabbed her sister’s shoulder and moved her toward the ceramic bowl. Startled by the sudden movement, Kit craned her head back to see. With flailing arms, she fell back onto the floor. She groaned slightly and turned her face to release the impending vomit onto the tiles.

Exasperated, Bette perched herself on the edge of the bathtub and fought back the tears. She stayed until she heard steady breathing coming from the lump on the floor. She retrieved two bottles of chilled water from the kitchen and left one near the head of her slumbering sister and took the other back to her room where, in the late hours of the afternoon, she blocked out her emotions and began her homework.

Just after 5:00, Alice, Dana and Shane made their way into the Planet.

“Do you think she’ll be okay?” Dana asked as they each placed themselves in the queue.

“Who, Kit or Bette?” Shane asked sardonically. Dana merely shrugged and ordered a fruit smoothie.

“God, I thought Kit was done with that shit; she seems so happy lately.” Alice mumbled, facing downward when they made their way over out of the café each clutching their drinks.

Alice had been uncharacteristically quiet since Shane and Dana had arrived to help. Getting a writhing Kit Porter into a car had taken all their hands and, as usual, Bette had insisted on driving back to her house with her sister alone. The three friends knew this was Bette’s initial “recovery time” and without complaint, had piled into Shane’s car and tailed the siblings. Back at the house, they regrouped to stagger towards the end bedroom before arranging water, coffee, towels, sick buckets, etc. and taking their leave. The routine was performed wordlessly, for the need to speak had died long ago when they’d first discovered Kit’s drinking.

Dana and Shane glanced at each other and then at their friend. Dana stepped forward and laced an arm around the blonde’s shoulders, “Wanna come to mine and watch DVDs?”

    1. Poor Bette…..she’s got alot to deal with, but that’s what sisters do, they’re there for you when you need them. Seeing Tina seemed to cheer her up & vice versa. Good luck with the job interview!

    2. Happy to see you back posting AD! And two for one at that! I can imagine that this would have been a true glimpse of Bette’s life taking care of Kit and keeping up her facade. Tough on anyone, especially a high schooler. Dana and Alice are so sweet.

    3. Yes Yes, you know I loved the story, AND I see you posted two. I guess my gentle nudge paid off huh? :-))) Have I told you how proud I am of you? I know you had some difficult decisions, and I also know that you were torn between societal expectations and love. You are a brave sould my dear friend for choosing the courage to love freely, and not be pressured by keeping up the image that others want you to. I applaud you, and as for Ash, all I can say is she is one hell of a gal, and I hope she understand the depth of your feelings in making the decision you did. Again, so proud of you Jade. When you start making big decisions at a young age, you can only imagine what you are preparing yourself for in the future. BIG hugs to you sweetheart, and one for Ash as well.

    4. Glad that you are getting a break from school. I actually have a good job, just pay sucks but I do love my job. I can see Bette’s smile along with Tina running her hands through her hair and then smiling at Bette.

    5. AD would ya believe I almost forgot about this story,,LOL. But so glad that you back and as I always say, school comes frist!! I am glad that you are doind well and glad that we found out that it was Kit who was back to drinking again. But Bette has great freinds who helped her out, and at the end Tina and Bette had bad mornings and got to see one another and have a smile of a million bucks!! Great chapter

    6. I know all about those bad mornings that just extend into bad afternoons. I just got back from LA not too long ago so I’m playing catch-up on my reading. lol
