    Chapter 13

Tina and Bette were both dozing as evening approached again and darkness started to fill Tina’s room, Bette had been in the same cloths for a second day. She opened her eyes to look at the woman she loved with all of her heart. The woman who made her feel complete, the woman she planned to spend the rest of her life with raising their little girl. Tina lay there covered in the stark white sheet, breathing evenly as if she is resting peacefully. Bette leaned over to her, to whisper to her, “I love you with all of my heart. You are so beautiful. I have waited so long to have you in my arms again, to lay next to you, to feel your body next to mine. These thoughts will keep me sane until you can lie again with me in our bed, in our home……”

“I  …   love  …   you  …   too  …   baby!” came the faintest of whispers. So slight, so soft, barely audible. If Bette’s face had not been so near Tina’s, the words may not have been heard. Tina’s eyes open to meet Bette’s gaze.

    “Tina, Tina, say it again!”

With lips unable to speak anything else, these words filled Bette’s heart.  “I  …   love  …       you  …   too  …   Bette.”

Bette placed her cheek next to Tina’s. Their tears ran together. “Tina, can you tell me how you feel. Do you hurt anywhere?”

“Like ..   shit.”         In a faint murmur.   “My head hurts.”

“I’ve got to get the nurse.”

Bette stands with weak knees, but regains her composure to walk out the door of Tina’s room and to the nurses station. The nurse looks up from her paperwork.

“She spoke.  In a whisper, she spoke.”

“That’s great. Let me get her chart and I will be right in.”

The nurse comes into the room, “Hello Miss Kennard, so, I hear that you have made some considerable progress today. Do you have anything that you would like to tell me.”
