    Hold A Place For Me

Bette: “I do know you’re upset.”

Tina is shouting as she grabs her bag and walks out into the yard, “Upset? That’s a ***** understatement. I have so many feelings going through me right now, at this point, I’m god-damned certifiable. I don’t know whether to kill you or myself.”

Bette knows she’s struck a nerve because of Tina’s choice words.

Bette: “I understand you’re angry, but we should talk this out. If you want to hate me when this is over, fine, but there’s no reason to act like this.”

Tina shakes her head just as the taxi pulls up in front of the house, “No reason? You obviously have no ***** clue as to what you’ve done to me. You’ve hurt me more than anyone in my life. You’ve made me feel used then trashed. I feel worthless. But more than that, do you want to know what angers me to no end? You really want to know what makes it so ***** hard to love you so much and hate you all at the same time?”

Bette remains quiet, expecting to be screamed at yet again. Tina says nothing, but begins ramming her hand down into her bag. Furiously searching. She finds what she is looking for then throws the slender object at Bette’s feet, “There! I hope you’re ***** happy.”

Bette reaches down and picks up the small plastic applicator. She turns it over, studying the pink lines. Tears well up in the channels of her eyes and her lips quiver as she speaks, “Positive….when?”

Tina has calmed drastically at the exposure to Bette’s shocked state, “It doesn’t matter when….it matters now. Because I have to care for this baby. I have to consider it’s future, too. I wanted to do this for you…for us. It was supposed to be a surprise. So I guess you’re not the only one keeping secrets.”

Bette cries into her hands at the reminder of her affair. Now knowing what Tina has kept hidden she feels even worse for what she has done to the love of her life…and now her child.

Tina turns towards the cab, “I have to go, Bette.”

Bette rushes to the opened door, “No, please, Tina, let’s just talk about all this. I’m not saying we’ll work it out, but please….I need you.”

    Tina is unforgiving, “Define need.”

Bette scrunches her forehead, trying to formulate a suitable answer.

Tina: “See….you just don’t get it. You don’t need me…you need you. It’s always been about you. Talking won’t change anything. We can’t talk forever. We’ve said all there is to say.”

Bette wipes away her tears when she realizes her sadness won’t keep Tina there so she adopts a new tactic and becomes more demanding, “Tina, you can’t leave…not until we’ve talked. That’s my baby, too and I won’t let you leave under these circumstances. Please, not while we’re both hurting.”

Tina: “I’m sorry, Bette, this is one thing you can’t control.”

Bette: “Tina, I have a right to this baby.”

Tina looks apologetically at Bette, “Not this time. You let that go when you lost me.” Tina climbs inside the taxi and the driver pulls away. Bette, helplessly, watches her go….both of their hearts breaking.
