Great Unexpectations Chapter 2
Previously…
Do you remember the words I said to you on the phone? The night before-"
"Yes, of course." Bette interrupted. " Well most of them anyway. I might not have the exact words but it was: ‘I should never have let you go. I would do anything for a second chance. And, I’m not afraid to make a fool of myself.’ But T, actually I didn’t even need them-"
This time it was Tina who interrupted. Not with a word but with her hand. She held up her right hand while looking down and wincing. Not really needing the details right now, Bette.
Bette stood still trying to interpret her meaning. Tina looked as if she was in pain. Bette bent over trying to lock with Tina’s eyes. "Are you ok Tina?"
Tina didn’t answer the question because in actuality she hadn’t even heard it. She looked up and faced Bette squarely. "Well, I’m glad you didn’t use them Bette. Those words weren’t for Jodi. They were for you.
Chapter 2.
Bette stood with her mouth slightly ajar. "Could you repeat that please?", she asked, not believing her ears.
"I don’t think so." Tina rubbed her forehead with the back of her hand, trying to figure out a way out of this one. "I can’t even believe I said it the first time."
"So, what? You didn’t mean it?"
"No. I meant it. I just didn’t mean to say it."
Bette walked back to the sofa. Needed to sit down. She quickly drank what wine there was left in her glass. She couldn’t exactly say that this had come out of the blue. She had noticed the little bits of flirting that Tina had been laying on before New York. The seemingly innocent kisses as she was spurring her on with Jodi. She had simply dismissed them as wishful thinking.
Tina watched and waited apprehensively. That was the dumbest thing you’ve ever done. Except, of course, the whole Henry thing. Jesus Tina, when you fuck up you really go all out.
She grabbed the wine bottle and offered it up to Bette silently.
Bette raised her glass in acceptance looking forward with a thousand-yard stare. After filling Bette’s glass Tina quickly took the wine bottle to her own lips and drank greedily. She was so desperate for a quick buzz she abandoned all etiquette.

In sleep, when the defenses are down, all sorts of truths can be revealed. Dreams, sleepwalking, talking… Just as effective as, say, a half bottle of wine. Looks like Bette’s been rumbled. Ah well, ta-ra Jodes! Can’t say anyone will miss you, dear. Now then, on to the future! Great update, red. Your writing is very good indeed. Post soon! Thanks
oh no u stopped there!!!!! great storytelling i was/am so into it…so u gotta post soon huh? pleaszzzzzzz….
Great story and excellently written! IC and her crew could learn much from you! Your portrayals of their mannerisms, thoughts, reactions, everything is so much like all of them. You write Alice to a tee! I knew Jodi would know that Bette wasn’t saying her name. You have to feel bad for her but there’s no chemistry between them. Or maybe it’s that the chemistry between B&T is so off-the-scale that it makes Bette and Jodi’s chemistry seem more sisterly than lover-like. All I know is I want to puke when I see Bette and Jodi kiss…yuck! Something is just not right there, and with JB being such a talented actress I have to think that their lack of chemistry is intentional. Oh who knows, but I do know that you sure can write. I’ll be waiting for your next post!
“The question of the night. The question of a lifetime.” There’s no questioning the bound there is between Tina and Bette, they’ve been sidetracked a bit, that’s all. Your writting is a delight to read, and I like this flirting side of Tina. Tina seducing Bette is going full circle in their story. Thank you for a great chapter.
Excellent chapter. I really am enjoying this story.
Wonderful story – beautifully written
This story makes me worried that I talk in my sleep. LOL!
WOW!!!! That was a wonderful chapter. Thanks PPS
Loved The Graduate reference (here’s hoping that IC has a “what now” resolution in store for Jobette too). I also love your balanced portrayal of Bette and Tina; both are sympathetic (and flawed) in equal measure. And thanks for giving the Bette/Alice friendship the attention it deserves. I wish you were writing for the show!
I know I don’t talk in my sleep which is probably good, cos I know I would have got my face slapped a few times. I’m always for B&T getting together, at least it appears that Jodi knew her time with Bette was only temporary. I also agree with Tina and Alice, that comparison of Bette’s sucked.
Great story, lovely writing. Thank you.
So Jodi knew all along that Bette and Tina were special and that some day they would find that road back to each other. A very bumpy road but a road back anyway.
So I wonder what Bette has been mumbling in her sleep?! I always root for B&T and this story is no different! Thanks for the update, wonderful. PPS
this chapter was such a delight to read (alice/bette dialog was so real and entertaining)…it’s sort of gives you hope and then takes it away and then gives it to you again…i still think though that it can go either way…thank you
This is indeed a great story: very good characterazing, sensitivity, deep emotions. But don’t leave us too long hanging in there.
I am rereading this story and it still made me cry. How much do you have to love someone to SEND them to someone else? Really think Bette’s overly developed ability to see visual art takes away from her ability to communicate verbally. Thankfully we have Alice to draw her a picture.
That was awesome!
