GETTING TO THE GOOD PART—Ch. 3

James looked up from the computer to see an uptight Bette Porter standing in front of him. “I called the Peabody foundation but they can’t give out personal information without consent from the artist. But I did track down Jeff Rollins he’s here in L.A. I told him that you’d want to talk to him so he gave me his cell number and he’s expecting your call.”

“That’s great news thank you James. Keep on trying to find out what you can. I’ll be in my office we have a lot of work to make up for.”

Bette was starting to walk towards her office when James stopped her. “Bette you forgot your messages.”

Bette came back taking the stack from James. “They’re the messages from yesterday and this morning. Also…” James reached into his desk and pulled out Tina’s envelope. “A Ms. Tina Barton was here to see you but she couldn’t stay, she said that you were expecting this.”

James handed Bette the envelope with Tina’s name written across it. A small smile appeared on Bette’s face as she traced her finger across Tina’s name. As she stared down at the envelope she felt disappointed that she didn’t get to see Tina, and then she remembered about her decision to stay away from Tina.

“James I’ll be in my office.” James noticed the smile that appeared on Bette’s face but the smile was gone just as quickly as it appeared.

Bette entered her office closing her door before putting her things down on her desk. As she sat there staring at Tina’s name she once again felt conflicted. Her resolve to stay away from Tina was beginning to fade as she raised the envelope up to her face. It carried the faint scent of Tina’s perfume she turned the envelope around to open it only to see Tina’s note on the back.

    Bette,

I’m sorry that I couldn’t give this to you in person. I really enjoyed meeting you yesterday and I hope that Peggy didn’t give you a hard time after I left. I left my cell number on the front of the envelope at the behest of your assistant, and the drawing that I promised you is inside. I know that it’s a really busy time for you right now so I’d understand if you couldn’t get back to me.

    Tina

Bette sighed as she turned it back around. Maybe it was a good thing that she didn’t come in early, if she had seen Tina again she wasn’t sure if she’d be so willing to let her go. With great effort Bette threw the envelope into the wastebasket. With a steeled expression Bette turned back to her desk as she turned her computer on so she could start her day. She picked up the phone to call Jeff Rollins but before she could complete the call she turned back to look at the discarded envelope. She put the phone back down as she reached over pulling the envelope out wiping it of any imaginary debris, once she was satisfied that it was clean she put it safely in the confines of her desk drawer before closing it. With a softer expression she once again started to dial Jeff’s number.

    1. I know that envelope had better not stayed in that trashcan…what is Bette thinking? I think they all need to meet up at whatever club Tina & Carmen are going to. More please I love this story.

    2. Oh, nooooo! Toribio, I can’t believe you did it to me again! Jeez, I know it’s going to happen, and still I dive head first into it!… Yes indeed, you HAVE done it, you’ve made me addicted to this story, just like you’ve made me to “A helping hand…”… Arrgghhh… Okay, I guess that’s what talent is all about… No, seriously, I know you don’t have too much time, and I should be just happy that you decided to continue this story, but I’m gonna have to have an update of this in a near future, this is soooooooo good! And I think we all need Bette and Tina to see each other again… Okay, well, I guess this means Thank you for another brillant tale! Please come back soon.

    3. We all know as soon as Bette views the picture, now safely in her desk drawer, she will realize the true identity of “Kennard.” I am certain that That Tina’s style runs through all her work, no matter what the medium may be. Make her look at it soon. PPS.

    4. She should open it up because it just might give her a hint that Kennard is Tina. The style and the possible subject matter may lead Bette in the right direction.

    5. Hope Bette will call Tina after she open the letter,or envelope. Love this I believe Bette will turn Tinas world up side down. If Helena finds out that is when the dyke drama will come in thanks

    6. Toribio, Another wonderful installment to this charming and delightful story. It is so full of near misses and almosts that is could be cynical however given your light and gentle touch it is full of hope and inspiration. Bette and Tina have both been hit by a bolt of lightening and are now trying to find out what the hell it was and ahow it has changed them. Good to see that Alice is still the one with her foot in her mouth syndrome particularly around Bette’s love life. What you captured brilliantly was the group conversation as all the characters had their own voice and story to tell. Good to see that TIna has Carmen and Jamie to provide her with the truth and to try to get her to leave the santuary of the Peabody mansion and live a little. Thank you for painting such a bright and hopeful pisture. I love it. Much gratitude from your Loyal Fan.
