Tina rushed into the building which held Dr. Wilson’s offices over fifteen minutes late. By the time she was shown to Dr. Wilson’s office the discussion was well under way and she was left to play catch up.
“You are in good health and even though this would be a late in life first pregnancy for you there is no reason the pregnancy could not be viable” Dr. Wilson concluded. “The decision that you really have to make is choice of donor and or host if you will excuse the medical terminology.”
“Choice of donor or host?” Tina asked puzzled, as she slid into the space beside Bette giving her a quick kiss of greeting and apology for being late. Marcus would be the donor. They had not discussed any other choice. What did she miss? Host? What was that?
“It seems from what Dr. Wilson is telling me that there is a possibility that we could have our own biological child if we wanted to by participating in a study.”
“I don’t understand.” Tina sat back into the chair and reached for Bette’s hand.
“Dr. Wilson, could you tell Tina what you just told me? I need to hear it again.” Bette looked dazed and that was enough to alarm Tina.
“Hi Tina” Dr. Wilson looked at her and smiled. “Bette was telling me that you two are looking to have a second child.”
“Yeah, we are” Tina smiled at the brunette. “This time we want Bette to be the birth mother.”
“So the question is if you would like the child to be biologically yours or not?”
“I don’t understand” Tina confessed looking between the two women for answers. “Angelica is ‘biologically’ ours.
“Angelica is biologically yours and donor of the sperm” Dr. Wilson corrected. “There are trials underway involving ‘female sperm’ that you might want to consider as I was telling Bette.”
“Female sperm…? What is that?” Tina was more confused by the second.
“It has been conclusively documented that sperm is produced by females of many species including humans, in bone marrow. With our current technology it is possible that the sperm produced by human females could be used to fertilize a human egg invitro as we do with human male sperm. So the bottom line is that your sperm could theoretically be used to fertilize Bette’s egg or vice versa. The question for the two of you would be if you wanted to use the donor of the past or either of your own potential sperm samples.”
